The Assistant Football Coach – Defensive Coordinator supports the head football coach in coordinating and managing the intercollegiate football program, with primary responsibility for leading and developing the defensive unit. This role upholds the core values of Angelo State University and the athletic department while contributing to a competitive and student-focused program.
Responsibilities- Ensures full compliance with all NCAA, Lone Star Conference, Angelo State University, and Texas Tech University System policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Assists with all aspects of football operations, including practices; defensive player development; implementation of defensive strategies; recruiting prospective student-athletes; providing academic support; evaluating player performance; and promoting the football program.
- Supports event and program operations, including home game management, team travel coordination, and organizing community engagement and service activities for football student-athletes.
- Serves as a positive representative of Angelo State University and the football program, consistently modeling the university’s core values within the campus community, region, state, and nationally.
- Assists with athletics fundraising initiatives and related activities as assigned by the Director of Athletics or designated University administrators.
Skills and Abilities
/ Qualifications
- Knowledge of defensive football principles, including position-specific skills, strategies, rules, game planning, and conditioning methods relevant to coordinating a collegiate defense.
- Ability to design and lead effective defensive practice sessions, including drills, player development activities, and installation of defensive schemes.
- Ability to motivate, mentor, and positively influence student-athletes in both athletic and academic pursuits.
- Ability to recruit and evaluate prospective student-athletes, and effectively communicate the value of Angelo State University and its football program.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly to student-athletes, staff, administrators, and external stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited university or college is required.
- Football coaching experience or collegiate/professional playing experience required.
- Master’s Degree is preferred.
- Intercollegiate football coaching experience preferred.
The position requires prolonged periods of standing with intermittent sitting, walking, reaching, bending and grasping. Manual dexterity is also necessary. Incumbent works both in and outdoors, and has periodic exposure to dust, pollen, heat, cold, and inclement weather.
