Overview

Position: Sorting Room Worker

Employer: Salvation Army Family Thrift Store

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must have a GED or high school diploma
  • One year experience working in a warehouse preferred
  • Or any equivalent combination of training and experience providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities
  • Valid Texas state driver’s license or Texas state identification card
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to meet attendance requirements
  • Ability to read, write and communicate the English language effectively
  • Ability to perform continuous walking, stooping, standing, and some climbing
  • Duties are usually performed standing
  • Above moderate physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting, bending, reaching, twisting, pushing, pulling, and carrying moderately heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.) frequently
Working Conditions

Work is performed in a Store where there are some physical discomforts associated with changes in weather, or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.

Duties
  • Receives, sorts, prices and prepares all donated items for transport to the Family Store; determines suitability and pricing of items based on established material handling standards as outlined
  • Maintains the orderliness and cleanliness of the sorting room area; assists donors in donation reception including tax receipt; receives telephone calls to organize donor calls for pick up transport
  • Receives, inspects, sorts, and prices all items according to the category and condition; recycles items in accordance with outlined standards
  • Tags items with specially coded tickets and/or prices in accordance with outlined procedures; hangs clothes on hangers and placed on mobile racks to dock for transport; sort bric-a-brac & small appliances in carts / bins to dock for transport
  • Processes minimal daily processing quota to dock as outlined
  • Prepares non-suitable items to dock for recycling
  • Maintains the neatness and security of the sorting room area; cleans floors, tables, work areas & restrooms
  • Cleans all bins, carts, racks and material handling equipment
  • Assists customers who are donating items to The Salvation Army; directs donors to the loading/unloading area; assists with handling donations to the sorting room & dock area as needed; prepares and provides tax receipts as needed
  • Answers the donation pick up telephone line in a tactful and courteous manner; schedules and records donation pick-ups for transport. Sends all requests for general information and inquiries to the assigned department / employee
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Assists at Family Store as assigned
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of effective customer service techniques
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of basic mathematics
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with co-workers
  • Ability to present a positive and professional image of The Salvation Army
  • Ability to prepare and maintain reports in an accurate, complete, and timely manner
  • Ability to work independently and with limited supervision
Schedule

Schedule: will discuss

Part-time 29 hours a week. Paid bi-weekly. $8.25 an hour.
