Overview
Position: Store Clerk
Employer: Salvation Army Thrift Store
Minimum Qualifications- Must have a GED or high school diploma
- Three months prior customer service or retail experience
- Or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities
- Valid Texas state driver’s license
- Ability to meet attendance requirements
- Ability to read, write and communicate the English language effectively
- Ability to perform continuous walking, stooping, standing, and some climbing
- Duties are usually performed standing
- Moderate physical effort required associated with sitting, walking, standing, lifting, bending, reaching, twisting, pushing, pulling, and carrying light to moderately heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.) frequently
- Work is performed in a Store where there are some physical discomforts associated with changes in weather, or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like
- Operate and maintain the cash register and credit card machines
- Assist in maintaining the orderliness, cleanliness and security of the Customer Service Area
- Assist Store customers in donating and selecting Store items; respond to customer questions; answer telephone; maintain Store displays as directed
- Input and maintain daily Store sales using the cash register and credit card machines; collect all monies, count change and give customer sales receipt; prepare and package final sales for customer upon exit; run routine cash register printouts; close out register at end of shift; prepare and balance the cash drawer; ensure the Daily Sales Report is completed and signed
- Assure supplies in the Customer Service Area are adequately stocked for daily usage
- Maintain neatness and security of the Customer Service Area
- Explain store policy to customers and respond to questions regarding pricing and purchasing; ensure a pleasant experience for all customers
- Assist customers donating items to The Salvation Army; direct customers to the proper loading/unloading area; prepare and provide tax receipts as needed
- Answer the Store telephone in a tactful and courteous manner; respond to questions and provide directions and/or general information
- Maintain the neatness and security of the Customer Service Area; ensure forms, bags, etc. are stocked; clean floors, counters and work areas; maintain cleanliness of Store entrance/exit area
- Place and arrange items in the Store as directed; check all Store displays to ensure items are maintained; rotate and/or rearrange stock as directed; return items to the proper location after customers have handled
- Clean all display racks and shelves; sweep and vacuum floors; clean all glass areas; maintain the Store in a clean and inviting manner; maintain the customer fitting room area
- Inspect items for display/sale to ensure they can be used according to established policies and procedures
- Work assigned shifts as directed
- Perform other duties as assigned
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of effective customer service techniques
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of basic mathematics
- Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with co-workers
- Ability to present a positive and professional image of The Salvation Army
- Ability to prepare and maintain reports in an accurate, complete, and timely manner
- Ability to work independently and with limited supervision
