Job Summary

The Instrument Technician is accountable for utilizing trade knowledge and familiarity with plant and equipment to lead continuous improvement programs on specified equipment. This includes recommending and participating in equipment and preventive maintenance process improvements. The role requires independent problem recognition and solution under pressure, managing deadlines for breakdown, maintenance and project activities.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Operate machinery to produce and repair parts, tools and equipment using sketches, prints or instruction manuals.
  • Understand and demonstrate comprehension of English language, process specifications, required computer functions.
  • Read, interpret and follow work instructions and training materials.
  • Pass and maintain training and certification examinations as required.
  • Assess and input data into departmental/plant information systems.
  • Maintain inventory of spare parts and notify facilitator when parts are needed.
  • Document all equipment service activities and modifications in the Equipment Maintenance Logbook.
  • Perform emergency repairs, routine and scheduled calibration or maintenance on instruments, components and complete instrumented systems.
  • Use equipment such as oscilloscope, thermocouple simulators, electronic volt meter, ohm meter, current tester, decade resistance boxes, weights, gauge blocks, gauge wires, humidity, hand and power tools.
  • Operate in a neat and orderly manner, maintaining a clean and orderly work area, exercising care of company tools and equipment.
  • Ensure departmental practices, work areas and equipment are kept safe and orderly.
  • Comply with applicable quality management system, environmental, safety and occupational health policies (e.g., ISO 13485, ISO
    14001 & OHSAS
    18001).
  • Support engineering group in developing system design specifications, control system validation documentation and equipment process control software qualification.
  • Train lower class instrument mechanics in their growth and development.
Level C-2
  • Maintains inventory of spare parts and notifies facilitator when parts are needed.
  • Able to make critical decisions under pressure.
  • Document all equipment service activities and modifications in the Equipment Maintenance Logbook.
  • Works toward effectively managing deadlines in completing projects and breakdown maintenance activities.
  • Maintains calibration records orderly.
  • Possesses good understanding of instruments and instrument systems; diagnose problems, make repairs or re‑calibration as required.
  • Capable performing emergency repairs, routine and scheduled calibration or maintenance on instruments, components and complete instrumented systems.
  • Can perform instrument maintenance, repairs and calibration using equipment such as oscilloscope, thermocouple simulators, etc.
  • Works from drawings, sketches to install, repair and maintain instruments and instrumented systems.
  • Capable of connecting/disconnecting electrical connections, pneumatic and hydraulic fittings associated with instruments or components in a control loop.
  • Operates in a neat and orderly manner, maintaining a clean work area.
Level C-1
  • Makes critical decisions under pressure during breakdowns.
  • Works with engineers and facilitator as assigned to contribute to design changes or fabrication of prototype or experimental equipment.
  • Consistently manages a variety of tasks, some time consuming under pressure of the manufacturing process.
  • Identifies creative solutions while conforming to specifications and safety requirements.
  • Understands production machinery and equipment to diagnose, calibrate or repair complex problems.
  • Rebuilds modifies and contributes to design changes of recording or controlling instruments or automatic devices.
  • Performs highly specialized troubleshooting and repair work with little or minimal direction.
  • Supports engineering group in developing system design specifications, control system validation documentation and conducting equipment process control software qualification per written protocol.
  • Trains lower class instrument mechanics in their growth and development process.

Qualifications
  • High School graduate, G.E.D. or equivalent skills, experience or training.
  • Minimum of two years of technical school, military training or equivalent on‑job training in an instrument related field.
  • Standard testing techniques and practices for instrument testing and calibration of equipment.
  • Knowledge of instrument related diagrams, tables and specifications.
