Overview
Salt Lake City has openings for part-time Street Crossing Guards. The Street Crossing Guard works at school crossings during hours when children are going to or coming from school, directing actions of children and traffic to ensure safe crossings. They may escort children across the street and place traffic cones before duty and remove signs at the end of shift. Crossing guards are paid per shift worked.

About the TeamThe Public Services Urban Services Division enhances safety and accessibility for residents and visitors by ensuring ordinances and laws are observed and public spaces are kept clean and well-maintained. Position hourly rate: $17.85/hr.
Key Responsibilities- Work at an assigned crosswalk; when children arrive, take them safely across the street, watch traffic closely, and stop cars as necessary.
- Observe traffic to determine the best timing for crossing; admit children into designated crossing locations; escort and assist pedestrians as needed to ensure safe crossing.
- Use a STOP paddle effectively to provide a clear indication to road users during the crossing movement.
- Prepare the crossing zone by placing warning cones and turning on flashing lights; remove cones and turn off lights when crossing is finished.
- Inspect crossing signage and street conditions for damage and notify authorities to address issues promptly.
- Monitor and educate children regarding traffic safety procedures.
- Repeat the crossing process twice daily as children travel to and from school.
- Communicate safety hazards to the Crossing Guard Coordinator.
- Some knowledge of local traffic laws and basic traffic safety.
- Ability to see, hear, and respond quickly and accurately to emergency safety situations.
- Ability to communicate instructions clearly, firmly, and courteously.
- Regular and prompt attendance; available during school hours within the Salt Lake City School District.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions.
- May be required to attend training outside of school crossing assignments.
- Neat appearance.
- At least 18 years of age.
- Light work; exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and up to 10 pounds frequently, with negligible force to move objects.
- Physical demands exceed those for sedentary work; requires walking or standing for extended periods.
- Ability to step on and off curbs.
- Correctable eyesight of at least 20/40 in both eyes.
- Field of vision of 70° in the horizontal meridian in each eye.
- Ability to recognize colors of traffic signals and devices showing standard red, green, and amber.
- Note:
Color blindness may restrict crossing intersections without traffic lights. - Does not have average hearing loss in the better ear greater than 40 dB at 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz, with or without a hearing aid.

- Moderately physical activity; required to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Exposure to changing weather conditions.
