The Mobile Diesel Technician II will be responsible for performing licensed DOT inspections, preventative maintenance inspections, light and follow‑up repairs, light mechanical/hydraulic/electrical and electronic diagnostics, and other duties as assigned. The technician can perform more advanced diagnostics and repairs under the supervision of a Sr Mobile Diesel Technician or higher, and continues to learn additional advanced mechanical skills and diagnostic techniques.
A successful Diesel Technician II complies with all company policies and achieves high level performance metrics.
- Perform scheduled preventative maintenance (“PM”), DOT inspections, and follow‑up repairs on light, medium, and heavy‑duty vehicles in a mobile/field environment.
- Make minor adjustments and repairs on truck equipment such as electrical, brake, cooling systems, starters/alternators, fan clutches, engine electronics, diesel steering systems, engines (gas and diesel), transmissions, clutches, differentiates, and more.
- Diagnose, adjust, and repair truck equipment including electrical, brake, cooling, air conditioning, engine electronics, diesel steering systems, engines, transmissions, clutches, and differentiates.
- Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions using test instruments such as handheld computers and pressure gauges.
- Road‑test vehicles to diagnose malfunctions and ensure proper operation.
- Identify problems, determine accuracy and relevance of information, and evaluate alternatives using sound judgment.
- Independently manage parts inventory and equipment on the company‑issued service truck, performing periodic reconciliation.
- Maintain and operate the company‑issued service vehicle, conducting safety checks and pre‑/post‑trip inspections.
- Communicate effectively with clients and customers to assess their needs and provide assistance or resolve issues.
- Prioritize concurrent tasks and manage time allocations effectively.
- Use hand tools, precision instruments, diesel tools, welding equipment, lifts, and jacks.
- Document work on Repair Orders (“RO”) using the company‑issued iOS device and the TRAIT application, uploading pictures, parts used, and all findings.
- Accurately complete DOT forms and all other documentation in a timely fashion.
- Work independently and manage own daily schedule.
- Maintain a high level of productivity and meet or exceed Standard Repair Times.
- Obtain parts from approved local and national vendors as necessary.
- Communicate with management and support via email or phone to obtain approvals on estimates, retrieve purchase order numbers, and discuss RO findings.
- Perform all work in compliance with safety, health, environmental policies, OSHA, EPA, and DOT regulations.
- Maintain the company‑issued service truck, conducting daily safety checks and pre/post‑trip inspections.
- High School Diploma/GED and 3 years of experience in a related field. Alternate qualifications may include a degree/certification beyond HS and 5 years of experience.
- Possess and supply a set of hand tools needed for job duties.
- Obtain Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification T8 (PMI) within 18 months.
