Veterinary Technician

Position

Purpose:

The Veterinarian Technician provides excellent veterinary care to patients at the Vetco Total Care full-service hospital and delivers exceptional customer care to owners. The Technician represents the company’s mission and values and fosters teamwork and motivation within the hospital.

Essential Job Functions
  • Greet clients and patients, obtain weight and vital signs, record history and vital signs in the electronic medical record.
  • Assist veterinarian with routine and emergency appointments, surgery, dentistry and euthanasia, taking direct supervision from the veterinarian.
  • Perform patient restraint, obtain and process laboratory samples, handle and dispense medications and maintain the electronic medical record.
  • Schedule appointments, communicate with and educate clients, relay test results, manage inventory and accounts receivable.
  • Prepare patients for surgical and dental procedures, support induction and monitoring of anesthetized patients, monitor during recovery and prepare for discharge.
  • Provide in‑hospital treatments for sick patients, administer injectable and oral medications, intravenous therapies and support patient elimination.
  • Participate in training of new staff members and disseminate knowledge as required.
  • Keep hospital environment neat and clean; perform regular cleaning based on a maintenance schedule.
Other Duties
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Provide backup phone and front desk support as needed.
Education & Experience
  • Credentialed Veterinary Technician in the state where the hospital is located.
  • Minimum 1 year of previous experience as a Veterinary Technician in a veterinary practice.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Compassionate, professional demeanor during emotional and stressful situations.
  • Telephone and computer skills.
  • Team player willing to learn new techniques and treatments, offer creative ideas and accept change.
Work Environment

The majority of duties are performed in the Vetco Total Care full-service hospital. The position requires bending, kneeling, lifting up to 30 pounds and standing for long periods of time. A large amount of time is spent in direct contact with clients and their pets.

Contacts

This position will regularly communicate with clients, veterinary specialists and companies that provide products and services used by the practice.
