Job Summary

The Emergency Management Specialist supports the Division of Emergency Management in the Department of Public Safety at the University of Utah by implementing all-hazards planning, training and exercise development, with a focus on cross-training in key incident command system section leadership positions (finance, logistics, operations and planning). Working reporting to the Emergency Management Associate Director the Specialist will also share in other duties as assigned, including emergency response (e.g., staffing the Emergency Operations Center during planned and unplanned events) that will require scheduling outside of normal working hours.

No relocation expenses are available for this position.

The CSO is responsible for overseeing the University’s Department of Public Safety, which includes the following operational divisions:
University Police, Campus Security, UHealth Security, Emergency Management, Emergency Communications, and the central administrative Office of the CSO.

Responsibilities
  • Supports Emergency Management programs through planning, training, and exercise development. First 12 months may include dedicated time with active aggressor training.
  • Operational duties at the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) during planned events and incidents.
  • Available for on-call duties evenings and weekends as required.
  • Supports the incident management team.
  • May lead development and delivery of Emergency Management trainings, exercise programs, and event support coordination.
  • Productively engages with campus community through trainings, events, and partnerships.
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with internal and external partners, agencies, and organizations.
  • Participate in achieving team, division, and department goals and initiatives.
  • Proficiently use common programs for email, word processing, and database management.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience), plus one year of directly related experience.

    Demonstrated ability to work independently, analyze and make decisions related to program content. Strong coordination and organizational skills required to prioritize conflicting deadlines. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.
