Position OverviewGravity IT is seeking a mid-to-senior level Cloud Database Engineer (Azure-focused) to support and modernize a hybrid data environment for one of its clients on a contract basis. This role complements strong on-prem SQL Server DBA expertise by focusing on cloud-native database engineering, automation, and modernization initiatives.
This is not a traditional backup-and-index maintenance DBA role—it is a cloud-first, engineering-oriented position with strong SQL fundamentals. You will work closely with the team to support both legacy systems and cloud modernization strategies, including integration with data lakes and analytics platforms.
Duties & Responsibilities- Deploy, configure, and manage:
- Azure SQL Database
- Azure SQL Managed Instance
- Azure Postgre
SQL (if needed)
- Optimize cloud database performance and cost.
- Implement scaling, failover groups, and geo-replication.
- Support connectivity between:
- SQL Server 2022 AG (on-prem)
- Azure SQL
- Data Lake / Databricks
- Implement CDC, replication, or migration pipelines.
- Support ingestion pipelines into:
- Azure Data Lake
- Delta Lake
- Collaborate with Data Architect on lakehouse design.
- Optimize performance of SQL workloads feeding analytics.
- Implement Infrastructure as Code (Terraform / ARM / Bicep).
- Automate deployments using Azure Dev Ops / CI/CD.
- Implement monitoring and alerting in Azure Monitor / Log Analytics.
- Build repeatable patterns for:
- Database provisioning
- Security configuration
- Backup validation
- Tune Azure SQL workloads.
- Analyze wait stats, execution plans, and Query Store.
- Support HA/DR configurations in Azure.
- Participate in architecture discussions and improvement initiatives.
- 5–10+ years SQL Server experience, including administration, performance tuning, and backup/recovery.
- 3–5+ years Azure database experience (Azure SQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Monitor).
- Strong understanding of Always On Availability Groups and hybrid cloud deployments.
- Hands‑on experience migrating SQL Server workloads to Azure.
- Strong T-SQL skills.
- Experience working in hybrid cloud environments (on‑prem + cloud).
- Experience with Azure Data Lake Gen2, Azure Databricks, Delta Lake, or Snowflake.
- Terraform or other Infrastructure-as-Code experience.
- Power Shell or Python scripting experience.
- Experience optimizing large analytical workloads.
