About the PositionThe Salt Lake City Fire Department seeks to add a dedicated professional to our CHAT (Community Health Assistance Team) program. This role provides personalized services for individuals who do not benefit long‑term from reliance on the 911 emergency system. By connecting them to education and resources, the program prevents local Emergency Departments from becoming de‑facto primary care providers. The CHAT team combines social workers with emergency service personnel to address both physical and mental health needs, developing comprehensive, person‑centered care plans and connecting clients to appropriate community services.
Work schedule:
Thursday–Saturday, 07:30–20:30 (21:30 on Thursday). Schedule may change based on department needs.
E26 – $60,941/yr. to $83,111/yr. (Established market rate: $83,111/yr.)

Key Responsibilities- Provide clinical and intensive case management services, including biopsychosocial assessments, treatment and service planning, crisis counseling, consultation, support, information, and referrals to community agencies.
- Serve as a bridge between citizens, the department, community agencies, and other professionals to coordinate services and optimal care routes.
- Monitor and document all care provided; routinely assess citizen and family responses to interventions, measuring treatment plan effectiveness and maintaining timely correspondence and reports.
- Conduct individual, family, and group therapy sessions in accordance with treatment plans and provide crisis intervention as needed.
- Provide debriefing to responders after traumatic incidents as requested.
- Maintain confidentiality and cultural sensitivity regarding ethnicity, race, socioeconomic status, and diversity.
- Educate and empower under‑represented and vulnerable populations, including refugees and immigrants.
- Attend staff and other meetings as assigned.
- Drive a vehicle when necessary to transport citizens or accompany officers in a co‑responder model.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Master’s Degree in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
- Current licensure in the State of Utah as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Clinical Mental Health Counselor, Certified Social Worker, Associate Clinical Mental Health Counselor, or the ability to obtain licensure within 6 months of hire.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively, demonstrating initiative and teamwork.
- Excellent interpersonal, active listening, critical analysis, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Judgment to assess and meet citizen needs, engaging in outcome‑oriented dialogue with citizens, families, community agencies, and professional schools.
- Appropriate boundaries with citizens and families while providing adequate services.
- Valid state driver license or Utah driving privilege card (or ability to obtain within 30 days).
- Successful completion of a drug screen if required.
- 3–5 years of related work experience assessing physical, mental, social, and economic needs of a diverse population.
- Experience collaborating with community agencies.
- Experience in substance abuse and mental health treatment fields.
- Ability to supervise Certified Social Workers, students, and/or Associate Clinical Mental Health Counselors.
- Fluency in oral and written Spanish.
- Mental Health Officer Certification.
- Stand, walk, or sit for extended periods; moderate exposure to elements (heat, cold, dampness, fumes, noise, dust, grease).
- Exposure to stressful situations due to human behaviors; occupational hazards significant in field operations.
