Job Summary

Position Summary:

The MRI research technologist performs advanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging procedures in both scientific research and clinical diagnostic settings. This role supports a broad range of imaging activities, including human and pre‑clinical studies, and collaborates closely with investigators, physicists, clinical trial teams, and multidisciplinary research personnel. The ideal candidate is self‑directed, dedicated, innovative, and adaptable within a dynamic research environment.

Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities:

Performs high‑quality MRI scans according to established protocols and parameters across both clinical and research applications. Adheres strictly to all MRI safety guidelines, screening procedures, and departmental policies. Confidently performs IV catheter insertion and operates patient monitoring equipment. Provides exceptional patient care, including working with high‑sensitivity populations in both clinical and research settings. Supports pre‑clinical imaging workflows, including animal handling and protocol adherence.

Research Support & Study Operations:

Collaborates with investigators and clinical trial teams during study setup, workflow design, and ongoing study support. Understands and upholds Good Clinical Practice ( GCP ) standards. Ensures compliance with HIPAA regulations, informed consent processes, and all IRB requirements for human research. Manages and curates large imaging datasets, including DICOM transfer, quality control, annotation, and archival. Supports research teams by uploading imaging data to internal and external repositories following study‑specific requirements.

Technical Expertise & Data Management:

Manages, organizes, and troubleshoots DICOM data workflows across scanners, PACS, research servers, and sponsor portals. Maintains proficiency in imaging‑related software, emerging technologies, and tools used for image annotation, curation, and analysis. Works closely with MRI physicists to assist in protocol development, optimization, and implementation for both clinical and research imaging. Supports data integrity throughout the research life cycle and ensures adherence to secure data handling practices.

Collaboration & Professionalism:

Works effectively with a diverse, multidisciplinary team including clinicians, researchers, physicists, coordinators, engineers, and research staff. Demonstrates adaptability in a research environment with evolving priorities and workflows. Provides MRI coverage during variable work hours, including occasional evenings or weekends. (No call required.)

Training Requirement: Completion of CITI training within the first 6 months of hire is required.

Minimum Qualifications

Required

  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
  • Current licensure to practice as a Radiologic Technologist in the State of Utah.
  • One of the following
  • ARRT Registration as Magnetic Resonance Imaging R.T. (MR) ( ARRT ).
  • MRI Technologist Certification from the American Registry for Resonance Imaging Technologists ( ARMRIT ).

Preferred

  • Three years of technical experience or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
