Primary Purpose

Provides services of both technical and non-technical nature in the laboratory service areas. Primary function is to ensure that all specimens handled are processed correctly and accurately. Delegates tasks as needed to ensure that the workflow is smooth and continuous.

Essential Functions
  • Provides training, teaching, and organization of duties for technicians.
  • Delegates assignments (specimen processing, specimen testing, equipment maintenance, and clerical duties).
  • Informs supervisor of any daily staffing changes that need to be considered.
  • Informs the supervisor of any counseling or disciplinary actions needed by an individual on shift.
  • Participates in performance appraisals.
  • Monitors time and attendance.
  • Masters all Path Net functions used by Technicians for editing and quality control.
  • Edits requisitions and orders processed in the specimen receiving area.
  • Records all problems and maintains all problem logs for the area.
  • Has thorough knowledge of specimen acceptation/rejection policies for the section.
  • Participates in monthly quality assurance studies and compiles, upon request, quality assurance information for specimen receiving.
  • Initiates resolution using all available resources or notifies the appropriate individual of any problems relating to the section.
  • Monitors and resolves issues regarding pending specimen lists.
  • Has knowledge of ARUP and UUMC laboratories, their location, hours of operations, and general function.
  • Has knowledge of ARUP’s infrastructure, and adheres to proper chains of command.
  • Functions and abides by the Job Description/Primary Purpose of Technician as directed by the Group Manager.
  • Meets output measures as defined by individual group procedures. Assists others in areas of defined competency when assigned workload is complete.
  • Complies with safety and biohazard regulations as outlined in the Laboratory Safety Manual.
  • Attends laboratory meetings and in-services as required.
  • Remains informed of all procedures and procedure changes.
  • Maintains confidentiality of laboratory results/information according ARUP policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Physical And Other Requirements
  • Stooping:
    Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.
  • Reaching:
    Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Mobility:
    The person in this position needs to occasionally move between work sites and inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Communicate:
    Frequently communicate with others.
  • PPE:
    Biohazard laboratory environment that requires use of personal protective equipment in accordance with CDC and OSHA regulations and company/departmental policies.
  • ARUP Policies and Procedures:
    To conduct self in compliance with all ARUP Policies and Procedures.
  • Sedentary Work:
    Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
  • Fine Motor Control:
    Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
  • Absolute integrity in the accurate identification of samples, test performance, and reporting of results.
  • Vision:
    Having close, far, and peripheral visual acuity to perform a variety of tasks such as make general observations of depth and distance.
  • Color Vision:
    Perception of and ability to distinguish colors.
Qualifications

Education

Required
High School Diploma or Equivalent or better

Experience

Required
Two (2) years of full-time clinical laboratory experience appropriate to the section have successfully passed competency requirements

Preferred
Some college level courses in biology, chemistry, or related life sciences
