West Valley City, UT & Salt Lake City, UT (salary ranges: West Valley $28.94-$41.99 per hour, Salt Lake $35.00-$54.00 per hour)

Schedule

7‑On/7‑Off A week: 2:00 PM – 12:30 AM (starting time flexible)

Training Schedule

Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM for approximately 4–6 months (schedule may vary depending on training area).

Primary Purpose

Provides services of both a technical and non‑technical nature in the laboratory service areas. Performs routine and complex laboratory tests in an assigned department of the clinical laboratory to provide physicians with rapid and accurate laboratory test results. Works under the direction of specialist, lead, and/or supervisor. This position is not qualified for delegation of supervisory duties for NY testing areas.

Essential

Functions
  • Performs waived, moderate, and/or highly complex analytic processes without direct supervision for which they are qualified, trained, and demonstrate competency according to established lab SOPs.
  • Operates, calibrates, and troubleshoots laboratory instruments and ensures proper functioning of laboratory equipment; requests service under a contract or reports needs to supervisor.
  • Performs quality control procedures as specified in lab SOPs and maintains QC records and documentation necessary to meet accreditations.
  • Follows appropriate specimen collection, handling, transport, and recording procedures.
  • Processes data, verifies accuracy, and enters data in the laboratory information system, adding explanatory or interpretive information promptly.
  • Monitors QC and assists in data collection for QA indicators as assigned.
  • Performs internal and external proficiency testing.
  • Meets output measures defined by individual group policy; assists with workload in any section where competency is current.
  • Recognizes critical patient results and follows the defined process for reporting them.
  • Recognizes unexpected results, errors, and problems with patient tests and escalates as required.
  • Understands theory of laboratory procedures and evaluates potential causes of unexpected results.
  • Correlates clinical and laboratory data with pathologic states to determine result validity.
  • Evaluates exceptions to established criteria and special circumstances related to specimen collection and integrity to determine impact on testing.
  • Recognizes appropriate and inappropriate selection of basic and complex lab tests.
  • Prioritizes order of testing and coordinates general workflow in assigned area.
  • Resolves and documents resolution of all QC results that fail criteria and institutes corrective action.
  • Integrates and relates lab data to investigate possible discrepancies and contributes to the resolution.
  • Trains new and current employees on procedures and policies.
  • Provides technical information and instruction to clients, new employees, medical students, residents, peers, physicians, and public as requested.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of reagents and supplies.
  • Directs workflow activities and reviews daily data reports as assigned.
  • Performs assessment of peers performing testing as a qualified observer after two years of experience (excluding NY testing).
  • Other duties as assigned.
Physical and Other Requirements
  • Stooping: bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.
  • Reaching: extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Mobility: occasionally moving between work sites and inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Communicate: frequently communicate with others.
  • PPE: biohazard laboratory environment requiring use of personal protective equipment per CDC and OSHA regulations.
