CompensationHourly rate includes shift differential for nights, evenings, or weekend shifts. Exact compensation varies by skills and experience.
Primary PurposeThe Technician I is in training to provide technical and non‑technical services in the laboratory service areas. Duties include data handling, specimen processing, performance of selected laboratory testing, internal and external communication, documentation, quality control, equipment maintenance, supply maintenance, and minor troubleshooting.
Essential Functions- Understands appropriate specimen collection, handling, and transport per departmental procedures.
- Processes, triages, routes, and stores specimens according to established procedures.
- Evaluates specimens for acceptability and follows procedures for specimens that do not meet criteria.
- Prepares, organizes, and reviews specimens for run set up, ensuring accurate patient identification.
- Prepares reagents according to laboratory requirements and regulatory guidelines.
- Performs selected tests as allowed by regulatory guidelines.
- Performs and documents quality control and assists with equipment maintenance within predetermined parameters; does not calibrate instrumentation.
- As applicable, transcribes or transmits results previously validated by a Technologist; result validation cannot be performed by a Technician.
- Answers telephone calls in a timely and courteous manner and provides verified test results available in the LIS to authenticated individuals.
- Is proficient in the use of laboratory computer applications/programs.
- Documents cleaning and maintenance of work area and equipment as required.
- Stocks and maintains supplies and documents all required information; notifies the appropriate supervisor as needed.
- Attends laboratory meetings and in‑services as required.
- Remains informed of all relevant process and procedure changes.
- Is productive in all areas for which competency has been achieved.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Stooping: bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.
- Reaching: extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
- Mobility: occasionally moving between work sites and inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
- Communicate: frequently communicate with others.
- PPE: biohazard laboratory environment requiring use of personal protective equipment in accordance with CDC and OSHA regulations and company/departmental policies.
- ARUP Policies and Procedures: conduct self in compliance with all ARUP policies and procedures.
- Sedentary Work: exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
- Fine Motor Control: picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
- Vision: having close, far, and peripheral visual acuity to perform a variety of tasks such as general observations of depth and distance.
- Color Vision: perception of and ability to distinguish colors.
High School Diploma or equivalent or better.
ExperienceSome college level courses in biology or related life sciences; laboratory experience.
