MCOT teams offer community-based intervention to individuals living in Salt Lake County. Outreach teams go to homes, schools, shelters, workplaces, or any community location where a person is experiencing a crisis. A two-person team supports emergency department and justice system diversion. Teams have vehicles and equipment for most field work and are managed and dispatched in real time by an MCOT Dispatcher using GPS to reach crisis locations quickly.
EssentialFunctions Of Mobile Crisis Services Include
- Triage/screening, including explicit screening for suicidality
- Assessment
- De-escalation/resolution
- Peer support
- Coordination with medical and behavioral health services
- Crisis response planning and follow-up
- Immediately respond to deployment requests from Utah Crisis Line (988) dispatchers and/or 911 dispatchers for in-person crisis and behavioral health emergency situations. Expected response time is arriving on scene within 30 minutes of law enforcement requests and within 60 minutes of community member requests.
- At the direction of MCOT dispatchers, triage and prioritize community response based on highest acuity behavioral health emergencies.
- Act as a mental health officer of the Salt Lake District Court to assess patients’ risk of harm to self or others and determine if involuntary commitment criteria are met for further assessment or hospitalization.
- Engage with the patient, family/friends, other first responders (law enforcement/EMS), and others on scene to coordinate crisis intervention and collaborative emergency care.
- Follow all behavior‑management, de‑escalation strategies, and crisis intervention protocols and procedures.
- Develop and implement individualized crisis response and safety plans to meet each patient’s needs and coordinate with community partners for contingency plans in case of escalation.
- Assess and provide for the patient’s behavioral health and social needs through connection to the appropriate level of care and community referrals based on training, policy, and protocols.
- Attend safety training with local law enforcement and/or University of Utah Health Safety and Security, and receive training on situational awareness, risk assessment, and appropriate response to potential on‑scene weapons or illegal substances.

- Assist patients and families with treatment adjustments and coordinate with local, state, and federal agencies.
Licenses Required
- Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system; to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
- One of the following:
- Current license to practice as an Associate Clinic Mental Health Counselor in Utah.
- Current license to practice as a Certified Social Worker in Utah.
- Additional license requirements as determined by the hiring department.
