Job Summary

The Wang lab in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry is seeking to fill two lab technician positions—one at the junior level and one at the senior level. The Wang lab develops and uses novel biochemical tools to study the biosynthesis and functions of important chemical modifications on RNA. Commonly used techniques in the lab include cell manipulation, RNA purification and treatment, molecular cloning, protein purification, and Illumina sequencing library construction.

The technicians are expected to work closely with the PI to carry out specific experimental tasks and generate publication-quality data. They will also assist with maintaining lab supplies and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs laboratory research as directed by the supervisor(s). Responsibilities will be modified as the technician gains experience in our lab. Responsibilities may include:
  • Molecular biology assays (molecular cloning, protein purification, sequencing, etc.).
  • Cellular assays (cell culture, transfection, western blotting, RT-qPCR, etc.)
  • Attends laboratory meetings, presents data and participates in discussions.
  • Contributes to general laboratory maintenance and general reagent production as needed.
  • Reads the literature and prepares for the lab work.

Nearly Continuously:
Office environment.

Infectious disease, oils (there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids), hazards (includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals).

Seldom:
Exposure to animals.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or other scientific disciplines in a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required; knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances. Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment, ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.

OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification may be required by some departments.

Preferences

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, or other scientific disciplines in a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required; knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances.
  • Undergraduate GPA higher than 3.2/4.
  • Applicants who are willing to learn and contribute to the lab environment for at least 2 years.
  • Good at math and ability to perform statistical calculations.
  • Demonstrated human relations and effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and ask for guidance when needed.
