Job Summary
Direct/Manage/Supervise tax planning strategies for the University of Utah. Ensure tax policies and procedures support the university's governance and objectives. Oversee all international, federal, state, and local compliance, calculations, and filings. Liaise with external auditors, tax planners, and the internal accounting department regarding tax reporting matters. Lead tax department internal controls processes and research changes in applicable tax law and their impact on the organization.
Provide guidance to finance leaders to manage risk and support growth.
- Lead day-to-day operations of the university's tax compliance requirements, including preparing IRS Forms 990, 990‑T, and federal/state payroll tax filings (W‑2, 1099).
- Ensure all work is performed in compliance with applicable federal and state laws, regulations, and university policy.
- Coordinate with staffing and finance teams to gather required unrelated business income activities for the annual Form 990‑T.
- Create, review, and share reports to assess the effectiveness of staff and programs, and develop Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) aligned with the university's three key initiatives.
- Assess the impact of proposed and final tax legislation, making recommendations to the Controller regarding tax planning opportunities and risks to the university.
- Maintain the highest level of ethical behavior and integrity; build professional relationships with peers at similar institutions and national/regional organizations such as NACUBO.
Education: Bachelor’s (or equivalent) with 10 years of directly related work experience, or Master’s (or equivalent) with 8 years of directly related work experience.
Equivalency: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience.
- Master’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) licensure or CPA‑eligible status.
- Experience in higher education, especially institutions with strong research programs or academic medical centers.
The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date. Financial Services is unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position.
