The Senior Relay & Communications Technician will be responsible for the full lifecycle commissioning and testing of protective relays and associated apparatus
, primarily within distribution environments. This individual will play a critical role in ensuring protection systems are installed, configured, tested, and fully operational prior to energization.
This is a hands-on field role requiring strong experience with Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) relays and Doble relay testing equipment
, as well as proven ability to decommission and replace legacy protection systems including ABB and similar relay platforms.
The ability to independently perform complete commissioning and validation of installed systems is a non-negotiable requirement.
Key Responsibilities- Install, configure, and commission SEL protective relays in distribution and substation environments
- Perform secondary injection testing using Doble relay testing equipment
- Conduct functional trip testing and end-to-end commissioning
- Validate protection settings, trip curves, timing, and logic schemes
- Decommission and replace legacy ABB and other protection relays
- Verify CT/PT wiring, polarity, and proper relay integration
- Perform point-to-point checks and breaker control verification
- Support communications and SCADA checkout as required
- Troubleshoot protection system issues and resolve mis-operations
- Prepare detailed commissioning documentation and test reports
- Ensure all work meets utility standards and safety protocols prior to energization
- 7+ years of hands-on experience in relay testing and commissioning
- Extensive experience with SEL relays (e.g., SEL-351, SEL-451, SEL-487, SEL-751 or similar)
- Strong proficiency using Doble relay testing sets for secondary injection testing
- Demonstrated experience commissioning protection systems from beginning to end
- Experience decommissioning and replacing ABB or legacy relay systems
- Deep understanding of distribution protection schemes (feeder, transformer, ground fault, overcurrent)
- Ability to interpret protection drawings, schematics, and logic diagrams
- Experience validating protection coordination and trip timing
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills
- Excellent documentation and reporting abilities
- Utility experience within regulated electric utilities
- Experience working under strict commissioning and energization protocols
- Familiarity with utility standards
- Experience supporting distribution automation or recloser protection systems
