Job Summary

The Building Electrical Group is responsible for all building electrical systems including lighting, fire protection, and low voltage for our design build, industrial projects. We design and build food and beverage production facilities, and our team is involved with designing electrical systems, calculating power loads, determining and selecting equipment sizes, and vetting and selecting suitable vendors, suppliers, and sub-contractors. The professional will have technical responsibility for scoping, performing, and delivering multiple concurrent project assignments.

Responsibilities
  • Designing electrical systems for building power—including normal, emergency, and standby distribution systems for 208 V, 480 V, and medium voltage for industrial facilities.
  • Execute duties on larger projects independently.
  • Client contact and lead engineer.
  • Documenting all necessary calculations: short-circuit, selective coordination, arc flash, generator sizing, steady state and transient voltage drops, load calculations, conductor sizing, raceway fills, etc.
  • Maintain project document organization.
  • Manage time and meet commitments.
  • Understand Ohm’s Law, AC/DC, electric and magnetic fields.
  • Understand power system theory—3‑phase vector math, power factor, symmetrical components.
  • Understand capacitors, inductors, and resonance.
  • Design lighting for food processing spaces, including lighting calculations for emergency and inspection lighting level needs; coordinate fixture placement/mounting with other trades.
  • Design fire alarm systems per NFPA 72, 101, and local building code.
  • Code expertise—NEC, NFPA 72/101, IBC.
  • Specify means and methods.
  • Specify other common work—grounding, start‑up, LV & MV cables.
  • Specify equipment.
  • Design low voltage systems such as LAN, phones, PA, Wi‑Fi, access control, cameras, etc.
  • Create power plans.
  • Create power one‑line and panel schedules.
  • Define fire alarm requirements per IBC and NFPA 101.
  • Define low voltage systems.
  • Review scope with client—create and manage needs list.
  • Produce bid documents: layout drawings, one‑line, riser, schedules, details, and specifications.
  • CAD—add 2D & 3D devices to Xrefs.
  • Procure long‑lead light fixtures and power distribution equipment such as switch gear, switchboards, panel boards, transformers, MCCs, generators, variable‑speed drives, and UPSs.
  • Transformer configurations.
  • Perform short‑circuit calculations identifying deficiencies or series ratings.
  • Estimate weights of main tray/trapezes and equipment needing support.
  • Assist in managing electrical bid process for clients, observing construction, and assisting with start‑up.
  • Project planning and feasibility studies.
  • Actively participate in and support department‑wide standard development, updates, and maintenance.
  • Research electrical building/power materials and best practices.
  • Support talent growth within our organization.
  • Assist with interviewing and hiring new team members.
  • Handle complex issues and tasks with minimal supervision; advise subordinate team members on solutions to issues they encounter.
  • Provide coaching and/or mentoring to a subordinate group when directed by supervisor.
Required Education, Skills & Experience
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or related 4‑year degree.
  • 8+ years of work experience in electrical systems for building power.
  • 8+ years of work experience in designing lighting, fire alarm systems, and low voltage systems for building spaces, including lighting calculations and coordinating fixture placement with trades.
  • 8+ years of work experience in electrical bid documents and procuring electrical materials and equipment.
  • 8+ years of work experience in AutoCAD, Revit, or other related design programs.
  • Relevant experience in a manufacturing or construction setting preferred.
  • FE or PE designation tracked as desirable.
  • Travel to customer project sites for fieldwork, review, audit, and meetings—estimated 25 % of the time.
