Associate Structural Engineer – WSP (U.S.)
Location:
South Jordan, UT (Utah Transportation Structures team).
WSP is seeking an Associate Structural Engineer to join our Utah Transportation Structures team. Your role will provide support to technical staff, engineers, and project managers throughout all phases of transportation infrastructure structure projects, primarily for the public sector.
Responsibilities- Review existing conditions and determine physical requirements for structure work, developing alternative structure types to fulfill those requirements.
- Conduct research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, resources, infrastructure, and transportation channels for conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction specifications.
- Assist with modeling, designing, and detailing to ensure safety and functionality for end‑users and vehicles, following structural engineering design standards.
- Verify site characteristics and provide technical assistance to secure structural soundness against loads and pressures caused by environmental or human influence.
- Write technical reports summarizing research findings and conclusions, producing complete, accurate, and concise documentation using sketches, calculations, software, spreadsheets, and 2D/3D illustrations.
- Support risk identification and assessment, offering input and analysis on design concepts, construction, mitigation, improvement activities, and remediation projects.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to execute project work.
- Assist with work plan preparation and coordination of site work.
- Complete training on assigned tasks.
- Work collaboratively with other engineers, professionals, and infrastructure authorities on federal, state, regional, local, and privately funded improvement and development projects.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- 1 to 3 years of relevant post‑education experience.
- Knowledge of structural engineering principles, practices, processes, design/build, and their application to project work‑related issues.
- Familiarity with infrastructure planning, rehabilitation, and new design.
- Familiarity with relevant structural and civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements.
- Analytical mindset with the ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to both engineering and non‑engineering audiences.
- Self‑leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multi‑tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team to meet business objectives.
- Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, physics, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
- Experience with discipline‑specific design software (e.g., Bentley Open Roads/Open Bridge, CSIBridge, MDX, LPile).
- Experience with AASHTO specifications, including LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, Guide Specifications for LRFD Seismic Bridge Design, and Manual for Bridge Evaluation.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project‑specific requirements that may extend beyond a typical workweek.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project‑specific requirements.
- Engineer in Training certification.
- On track to obtain a Professional Engineering (PE) license within four years of hiring.
- Prior design experience.
- Membership or active participation in local professional practice organizations.
