Position: ESL Lab Aide III (Part Time)

Overview

Under the general direction of the Associate Dean for English as a Second Language (ESL), this position provides technical support for English as a Second Language computing labs at the South City and Redwood campuses, with a primary focus on supporting ESL students through clear, accessible, and culturally responsive technology assistance.

Responsibilities
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear and accurate documentation, using plain language and visual or step-by-step guidance when supporting ESL students.
  • Working knowledge of Canvas, Microsoft Windows, other Microsoft applications, and learning management systems commonly used in ESL instruction.
  • Student-service oriented, dependable, and responsive to user needs, with patience and sensitivity to language learners.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work effectively with staff, faculty, and students at all skill and management levels, including ESL faculty and multilingual students.
  • Knowledge of computer lab operations, including providing technical support to students and faculty in ESL learning environments.
  • Ability to train and support users with varying levels of technical proficiency, including students with limited English proficiency.
  • Demonstrated creativity, flexibility, and initiative in problem-solving.
  • Ability to learn new systems, technologies, and procedures quickly.
  • Strong working knowledge of personal computers, including hardware setup and troubleshooting, software installation, performance tuning, and general maintenance.
  • Assist ESL students with the use of computers, printers, and other portable devices in a supportive and instructional manner.
  • Provide support to students and faculty by answering general questions related to class assignments and software applications, with an emphasis on ESL coursework and tools.
  • Perform problem recognition, research, isolation, resolution, and follow-up for routine user issues, escalating more complex problems to supervisors or other technical staff as appropriate.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
  • Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
Qualifications
  • Two or more years of experience in a technical support environment; preferably in an educational environment
  • Experience working with ESL students, multilingual populations, or in an instructional or student support role within an educational setting.
Work details

This position requires approximately 10–12 hours per week and involves travel between the South City Campus and the Redwood Campus.
