About WGU Academy:

WGU Academy is a division of Western Governors University aimed at improving college readiness on a large scale. Its primary mission is to develop and deliver innovative solutions for college and career readiness to individuals who might not be prepared for regular enrollment at WGU or other institutions. WGU Academy offers college-level courses that support students by fostering confidence, study habits, and communication skills essential for success during and after their studies.

The Academy collaborates with external institutions, foundations, and states to extend its impact.

What You’ll Do:

Instructors are subject matter experts responsible for teaching and supporting students enrolled in their assigned courses. They provide specialized instruction aligned with best practices and monitor student progress in competency development and course completion. Instructors adapt their teaching methods to meet individual learner needs, using technology to interact in group and one-on-one settings. They collaborate with other faculty to ensure consistent, high-quality support.

This position involves teaching/support in the following Accounting Fundamentals Courses:

  • Introduction to Spreadsheets
  • Principles of Financial and Managerial Accounting
  • Finance Skills for Managers
  • Mastering Quick Books

Main Responsibilities:

  • Develop instructional materials aligned with learning objectives and course competencies to support self-directed and virtual instruction.
  • Deliver engaging virtual events aligned with learning goals.
  • Participate in faculty development activities to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Provide proactive, relevant, and timely virtual coaching to students.
  • Facilitate student communities to promote collaboration and peer support.
  • Support students in achieving personal, academic, and career goals through personalized coaching.
  • Adjust instructional strategies based on student needs.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed:

  • Subject matter expertise in accounting and related areas.
  • Understanding of diverse student characteristics and learning needs.
  • Strong communication skills for moderating online communities and engaging students.
  • Ability to analyze student data to tailor support.
  • Respect for diversity and ability to adapt resources for individual needs.
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles and virtual instructional techniques.
  • Proficiency in developing engaging presentation materials.
  • Experience in facilitating online interactions and self-assessment activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in a related field (e.g., Accounting) with applicable licenses or certifications.
  • At least 3 years of relevant professional experience, including 1 year of online teaching.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the subject area.
  • Ability to work a student-friendly schedule.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree and relevant licenses or certifications.
  • Extensive experience with distance education and online students.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged sitting and working at a computer.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally.

The salary range for this position is approximately $68,600 to $103,000, based on skills, experience, and organizational needs.
