Overview

Face-to-face position to teach first- and second-year French courses. Our program is OER, communicative, task- and culture-based, and applies a decolonial lens. Some knowledge of gender-neutral language and Francophone Africa. We are looking for candidates who can teach one or two sections physically in the classroom, especially during the morning or afternoon. Evening sections are also available. Specific day and time are negotiable, but most classes are offered between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays.

All first-year French courses are in the hybrid format, so instructors who teach a first-year course are required to serve for one hour a week at the Center for Languages for conversation practices as part of their teaching load.

This is a pooled position. The department reviews applications as positions become available.

This position is paid at $1,056 per instructional unit.

  • Becomes familiar with and follows the current course curriculum outlines, and engages in accepted best pedagogical practices to maximize student learning.

    Collaborates with the course lead/mentor and other instructors to ensure consistency in course syllabi, pedagogy, assignments, ePortfolio work, testing, grading, and so forth.

    Supports the College’s mission, vision, and values by incorporating appropriate cultural material representing a broad variety of ethnicities, national origins, socioeconomic groups and other identities, in addition to using inclusive pedagogical practices in the classroom.

    Prepares and administers student assessments.

    Provides appropriate and timely feedback.

    Maintains accurate and complete student attendance records (for Financial Aid and Department purposes), grades, and other classroom documentation as applicable. Grades must be maintained on the College’s learning management system.

    Conducts a variety of appropriate evaluations of student performance. Informs students of progress to date periodically and assigns and submits grades by published deadlines.

    Becomes familiar with, and abides by, all college policies with immediate priority given to those policies that govern interactions with colleagues, staff, administrators, and departments throughout the organization.

    Provides ADA accommodations as requested.

    Completes required department paperwork on time. Completes/attends required College, department, and program trainings; participates where possible in other trainings, as appropriate.

    Handles/responds to student concerns/complaints, and responds to student communications and inquiries promptly (generally within 1-2 business days). Meets with course mentor and/or the hiring supervisor as needed. Works closely with department peers and administrator to understand processes and procedures that lead to becoming a successful teacher.

    Creates an effective, supportive learning environment for students regardless of delivery method.

    Teaches courses consistent with department procedures, appropriate Course Curriculum Outline (CCO) and catalog description.

    Provides each student with a syllabus (paper or online) at the first class meeting that complies with department procedure and the CCO. Assists in maintaining a safe and mutually respectful instructional environment.

    Prepares and submits incident reports to Dean of Student Services for inappropriate student behavior as defined by the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy.

    Maintains professional appearance as defined by the discipline and/or College procedure. Completes all required employee training. Becomes familiar with, and abides by, all college policies with immediate priority given to those policies that govern interactions with colleagues, staff, administrators, and departments throughout the organization.
