Overview

Under department supervision, the faculty member will teach (including team-teaching) ASL, or Deaf culture courses for the American Sign Language program as assigned by the ASL/Interpreting Coordinator and/or the Associate Dean.

This is a pooled position. The department reviews applications as positions become available. This position is paid at $1,056 per instructional unit.

  • In accordance with SLCC policy, adjunct positions are offered on a semester-by-semester basis with no guarantee of continued employment.
  • Official transcripts are required for those who are offered employment within 30 days of hire.
  • Follows the course curriculum outline, prepares and delivers lectures and other classroom activities.
  • Prepares and administers student evaluations.
  • Keeps accurate classroom records.
  • Provides ADA accommodations as directed.
  • Answers questions about courses.
  • Follows SLCC policies and procedures.
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language with demonstrated ability to converse fluently in high level professional and academic conversation in ASL required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, cultures, ethnic backgrounds, and abilities, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
  • Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities.
  • All faculty will maintain an on-site campus presence to encourage in-person relationships and create engaging, meaningful, and impactful learning experiences unless approved for online only courses. You are employed as an Adjunct Faculty member/Instructor on a contract-to-contract basis, with no future expectation or obligation for employment. Your employment may be terminated at-will at any time. You are required to maintain professional boundaries with all SLCC students.

    Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in American Sign Language, ASL education, Linguistics, or a related field (e.g., Deaf Studies or Deaf Education) from an accredited college or university is required.
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language with demonstrated ability to converse fluently in high level professional and academic conversation in ASL required.
  • Teaching experience in ASL.
  • Ability to read and write standard English.
  • Ability to use computer technology and programs, including email, spreadsheets, and program-specific applications.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Preferred qualifications
  • Master’s degree in American Sign Language or related field preferred.
  • Three (3) years full-time or five (5) years part-time college-level teaching experience in American Sign Language.
  • Appropriate certification(s) also required such as ASLTA, CDI, RID, NIC (National Interpreter Certification) and membership in ASLTA and/or RID.
