Position: Student Employment - Raising a Reader (RAR) Coordinator for Liberty Elementary (Part-Time)

Overview

Liberty Elementary is starting a Red Bag Raising a Reader (RAR) home reading program with 12 classrooms. You will assist teachers with book bag exchanges (motivations for reading and bringing back their bags). You will work directly with students to mentor them as they improve their skills reading or talking about books. You will help with parent trainings and organizing motivational activities for reading, as well as tracking books in classrooms and calling home if students have forgotten their bags or lost a book.

Assist teachers in coordinating the program and mentoring with the Red Bag RAR reading program.

Responsibilities
  • Assist teachers with book bag exchanges (motivations for reading and bringing back their bags).
  • Work directly with students to mentor them as they improve their skills reading or talking about books.
  • Help with parent trainings and organizing motivational activities for reading, as well as tracking books in classrooms and calling home if students have forgotten their bags or lost a book.
  • Assist teachers in coordinating the program and mentoring with the Red Bag RAR reading program.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to read, write, and speak well in English.
  • Bilingual skills a plus!
  • Organization, communication, and coordination skills.
  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor.
  • Patience to read with students from various backgrounds (unmet basic needs, multilingual learners, students living with disabilities, etc.).
  • Must have an SLCC Federal work-study award through SLCC’s Financial Aid office.
  • Must be able to earn a Work Study award.
  • Must be enrolled in 6 credit hours per semester.
  • Must work at least 10 hours and no more than 20 a week during the semester.
  • Must be comfortable talking with students, staff, and faculty.
  • Must have basic computer skills.
  • Program Associates may create their own work schedules within available hours at their school sites.
  • Must commit to attending an orientation and team meetings at the outset.
  • Must be able to leave campus and access the partner site using their preferred transportation method.
  • Experience working with elementary-aged students.
  • Experience with creating sustainable motivation.
  • Excellent reading skills.
