Position: SLTech Faculty ESL (Temporary)

This is a temporary appointment in SLTech College. No guarantee of continual employment.

Regular full-time faculty members teach assigned classes in accordance with established guidelines and policies. Faculty participate in advising, committee assignments, other academic and institutional support activities.

SLTech utilizes a faculty model that includes tracking and reporting student progress and employment outcomes; student and community access; and employer engagement. Program coordinator responsibility may be assigned. The mission of the English as a Second Language (ESL) courses at Salt Lake Community College is to improve students’ English language skills which will help them successfully develop personally, professionally, and academically at Salt Lake Community College.

Faculty member will teach, coordinate, and develop curriculum for English as a Second Language (ESL) courses to community college students with a specific focus on preparing students for entry into technica education programs and/or undergraduate degree, college level instruction. Faculty member may be responsible for teaching classes at any of the SLCC campuses and/or off campus sites, including on-site for businesses.

May be assigned to teach daytime, evening time, and/or Saturday classes.

  • Become familiar with, and abide by, all college policies with immediate priority given to those policies that govern interactions with colleagues, staff, administrators, and departments throughout the organization.
  • Maintain professional etiquette in communications with students, staff, faculty, and administrators.
  • Work closely with department peers and administrators to understand processes and procedures that lead to becoming a successful teacher and contributing member of the academic unit.
  • Maintains professional and collegial behavior.
  • Teach courses in English as a Second Language (ESL) for academic and career/technical education purposes.
  • Teach ESL in learning communities in collaboration with faculty from other departments to support ESL students.
  • Teach ESL for local companies in the community to support ESL students.
  • Work with community partners on efforts to support ESL students.
  • Assist the ESL department in recruitment efforts and onboarding of students and new faculty. Adapt methodologies for students with different learning styles and abilities.
  • Participate in faculty responsibilities such as: course and curriculum development and review, student learning outcomes and assessment, program review, committees, research and special projects as needed in the discipline/department or community.
  • Keep accurate classroom records, including but not limited to tracking student progress.
  • Have a minimum of weekly meaningful contact with each student enrolled in assign classes.
  • Answer questions about the course and advise students on program requirements and progress through the program.
  • Follow SLCC policies and procedures.
  • Support department curriculum and assessment initiatives.
  • Meet College and department deadlines and evaluate student work in a timely manner including submitting final grades on time.
  • Engage in departmental, school, college, and/or community service. Important emphasis is placed on collaboration with faculty peers.
  • Participate in on-going curriculum review, development and assessment of ESL courses. Assess the English listening, speaking, reading and writing skills of students and recommends appropriate level of courses. Exhibit a strong commitment to collaboration and collegiality with full and part-time faculty.
  • Attend regularly scheduled department meetings and presentations.
  • Complete required training and attend department meetings. Participate in on-going professional development.
  • Maintain expertise in area of teaching responsibility. Use new technologies, including the use of open educational resources, in the classroom to supplement instruction.…
