Overview
The School of Architecture (SoA) within the University of Utah's College of Architecture + Planning invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in design research and computational design. We welcome applications from candidates with knowledge and expertise of architecture as liberal art, design research and computational design. This is a full-time, nine-month appointment (1.0 FTE) beginning July 1, 2026.
The University of Utah School of Architecture envisions strengthening its research and design profile. The SoA offers an accredited Master of Architecture (M.Arch), a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies (BSAS), a Master of Science in Architectural Studies (MSAS), and a newly created Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies (BAAS) starting Fall 2025. A PhD program in Architecture is planned in the near future.
The curriculum emphasizes immersive design studios and a sequence from bachelor to master to capstone student-driven projects. The SoA is committed to teaching creative critical thinking, community engagement, design excellence, design research, ecological resilience, global citizenship, leadership/collaboration, and risk-taking/exploration. Our work is interdisciplinary, place-based, and focused on social justice and environmental stewardship. We host national conferences, publish the Dialectic, and support ideas on campus.

- Demonstrate a strong background in architectural design research at the intersection of architecture as a liberal art and computational design.
- Contribute to the design of undergraduate and graduate programs and teach studio and lecture/seminar courses in areas of expertise at both graduate and undergraduate levels.
- Collaborate across studio and core courses and take a leadership role in curriculum development in this area.
- Conduct high-quality research and produce scholarly work within an R1 university setting, with a strong research trajectory and potential PhD degree.
- Seek external funding, publish high-quality research and creative works, and mentor students through research.
- Promote the SoA's core beliefs—design excellence, responsibility, resiliency, respect, and response—and participate in committee and service assignments.
- An accredited degree in architecture with an advanced degree in architecture or design research focused on computational design.
- Previous academic teaching and/or professional experience with demonstrable examples.
- Demonstrated research and/or creative work with a trajectory of excellence.
- Ability to teach design studio courses and seminars for moderately complex projects, forms, and outputs.
- A PhD or doctoral degree in architecture with a focus on design research in computational design and architecture as a liberal art.
- Integration of architectural research with design projects and recognition for teaching and/or design.
