Overview

Academic Crisis Care Inpatient Psychiatrist, Rank DOQ – University of Utah Health (HMHI) Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine – Psychiatry. The University of Utah Department of Psychiatry, in partnership with the Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI), is inviting applications for faculty Inpatient Community Psychiatrist positions at the Kem and Carolyn Gardner Mental Health Crisis Care Center (MHCCC). This state-of-the-art, 82,000-square-foot facility serves as the primary crisis care center for Salt Lake County.

The MHCCC features a 23-hour receiving center, a 24-bed inpatient unit, and a dedicated floor for comprehensive services including case management, legal aid, and addiction treatment. Set to open in early 2025, this innovative center will help adults in mental health crisis de-escalate, stabilize, and connect to community resources catered to their individual mental health needs. The center will help our guests navigate a path to mental wellness by unifying critical crisis services and many community resources in one easy-to-access location.

At full clinical capacity, six full-time faculty psychiatrists will guide multidisciplinary teams using a cross-continuum practice model. A key aspect of this academic role involves the educational training and supervision of psychiatric residents. Successful candidates will hold a faculty appointment in the Department of Psychiatry with rank based on academic experience and professional contributions. The University of Utah is located in Salt Lake City, offering access to diverse cultural and outdoor activities.

Qualifications
  • Applicants should have experience or a strong desire to provide psychiatric care to those in crisis.
  • Hold or be eligible to apply for a current, unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Utah.
  • Expertise in adult psychiatry; completion of a residency in Psychiatry is required.
  • The candidate must be board certified or board eligible in Psychiatry. Obtaining board certification is a requirement for retention.
  • Additional training in community psychiatry, crisis/ED psychiatry, or addiction psychiatry is desirable.
Responsibilities
  • Clinical care: primary responsibilities include psychiatric inpatient care, crisis intervention and assessment, management of severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI), care for acutely suicidal patients, and supervised medical detoxification.
  • The selected applicants will focus on inpatient care, constituting around 75% of effort; the remaining 25% will be dedicated to the receiving center and outpatient services on site.
  • Work schedule is rotational, generally following approximately 4 weeks on service and 2 weeks off service, with some flexibility for individual needs. Call is an expected clinical responsibility for all faculty members; cross coverage for vacations and meetings.
  • Specific assignments will be coordinated through the Division Chief of Adult Psychiatry. Candidates should have experience providing team-oriented care, excellent time management skills, ability to work within managed care settings, and a creative and adaptive outlook in a fast-paced crisis environment.
  • Opportunities for research, presentations, and publications. Potential for community collaboration building cognitive networks with crisis care partners and stakeholders across the Wasatch Front.
Education
  • Engage in patient care activities with learners (residents, medical students, physician assistant students, and fellows); serve as a medical student and resident mentor; teach/supervise medical students, residents, and fellows in psychiatric clinical rotations.

Engage in scholarly activities; opportunity to participate in or initiate peer-reviewed research and develop materials (papers, courses, presentations, posters, games).
