Job SummaryThe Bus Attendant assists students during transport to and from school and special activities; ensures the safety and well‑being of special education students on the bus.
MinimumRequired Qualifications
- Successfully fingerprinted and passed a criminal background check.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English, including grammar, punctuation, and verbal instructions.
- Pass the Physical Assessment Standards for Utah School Bus Attendants.
- Obtain CPR & First Aid Certificate within six months of hire.
- Demonstrate adaptability and understanding of cultural differences while working in a diverse environment and coping with stressful student situations.
- Prior experience working with children with special needs.
- Assist special education students with loading, unloading, and safety procedures, including wheelchairs, safety vests, and evacuation drills.
- Secure students with seat belts and wheelchairs with tie‑downs to ensure safety.
- Push, pull, bend, reach, stoop, and lift up to 50 pounds as needed.
- Assist bus driver in teaching bus safety rules and maintaining safety.
- Learn bus routes to assist substitute bus drivers.
- ‑needs students until released to appropriate personnel.
- Monitor student behavior to prevent distractions or injuries.
- Respond to emergency situations, resolve immediate safety concerns, and direct students to appropriate personnel.
- Report observations and incidents to appropriate personnel.
- Prepare documentation such as incident reports and required paperwork.
- Participate in meetings, workshops, training, and seminars as assigned.
- Exercise good judgment, discretion, and confidentiality.
- Adapt to changing work priorities and interruptions.
- Support a team environment and assist other personnel as required.
- Maintain regular attendance.
- Communicate effectively with diverse individuals.
- Work under limited supervision, utilizing time‑management and prioritization strategies.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
The role requires moderate lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 50 pounds; occasional dragging up to 125 pounds; stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. Requires 10% sitting, 40% walking, and 50% standing in a clean, healthy environment.
