Job Summary

Join our dynamic Pre-Award Office within the Vice President for Research ( VPR ) as a Grant/Contract Officer I, an entry-level position offering a pathway to future career development in research administration.

This unique opportunity is within a new unit in the Pre-Award Office and involves comprehensive training to assist faculty with the preparation and submission of applications for extramural funding. In addition, you’ll initiate and oversee applications, create checklists of application requirements, aid in budget development, review submission documents, and collaborate with the Office of Sponsored Projects to ensure successful submission of applications.

This position offers training avenues to lead collaborative initiatives and cultivate innovative and creative approaches to addressing research funding challenges.

Responsibilities
  • Assist faculty in the development and submission of proposals for extramural funding.
  • Coordinate budget preparation and design with faculty for grants and subcontract applications.
  • Review proposals for completeness and assist with the adherence of required institutional documentation and deadlines.
  • Maintain a current knowledge of changing institutional policies and federal requirements governing externally funded grants and contracts.
  • Work closely with the University of Utah, Office of Sponsored Projects ( OSP ) to ensure that grant applications are routed for required internal deadlines and assist faculty members with any adjustments needed after the OSP review.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously while providing excellent customer service and meeting all deadlines.

Qualifications

EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT : 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor’s degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).

Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels:

  • Pre-Award Grants & Contract Officer ( GCO ), I: Requires a bachelor’s (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience or a master’s (or equivalency) degree.
  • Pre-Award Grants & Contract Officer ( GCO ), II: Requires a bachelor’s (or equivalency) + 4 years or a master’s (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience.
Preferences
  • Work management skills or work history that includes managing large projects.
  • Experience with managing data, including strong skills in Excel and other data management tools.
  • University of Utah experience, especially familiarity with University of Utah department administration (e.g., budgeting, accounting, payroll, etc.).
  • Research administration and/or grants and contracts experience with NIH and NSF, in particular.
  • A track record of working effectively with investigators and department staff on grants and contracts.
