Job Summary
Registered Nurse (Oncology/Hematology) uses advanced specialized knowledge, judgement for delivery of high quality and evidence‑based care to oncology patients and their families.
ResponsibilitiesThe Registered Nurse (Oncology/Hematology) uses a team approach to identify, analyze, and resolve patient care problems with measurable outcomes. Completes physiological assessments and documentation in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) in accordance with established policies and procedures. Manages monitoring requirements for specific drugs, handles immediate infusion reactions, and prevents and manages oncology‑related symptoms and adverse events, such as chemo‑related symptoms and immune‑related adverse events.
Other related responsibilities and duties include: monitors, tracks, reports ongoing care needs and outcomes to the interdisciplinary team; directs nursing education and orientation, competency development, and quality improvement; provides safe working environment while administering, handling, and disposing of antineoplastic drugs and medical waste; oversees administration and management of medical procedures and treatments in the oncology setting, including vascular access devices and infusion treatments;
conducts in‑service education based on oncology professional development activities and specialized skills, including chemotherapy administration, oncology electronic ordering systems, and drug dose calculations; triages patient problems, assists in evaluation of symptoms, and initiates interventions in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team; follows established policies and guidelines for specimen collection, line maintenance, laboratory results, critical values, and follow‑up protocols.
NOTE:
The Oncology/Hematology Registered Nurse may also be required to provide coverage in other areas not limited to General Infusion and Multiple Sclerosis/ Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis/ Parkinson Disease Clinics.
U.S. citizenship required; non‑citizens may be appointed only when recruitment of qualified citizens is not possible, in accordance with VA policy.
