Overview

Wor-Wic Community College is accepting applications for an environmental health and safety coordinator. This position is responsible for maintaining institutional compliance with applicable federal, state and local regulations, including OSHA, MOSH, NFPA, MDE and other regulatory and oversight bodies. The coordinator provides training, develops and updates workplace safety policies and procedures and assists with Clery Act compliance.

Essential Duties

  • Identifies, creates and coordinates the college’s safety program to comply with Maryland Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH) and U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards and related agency standards; interprets OSHA, MOSH and/or local safety guidelines and regulations and makes recommendations to maintain compliance; completes job hazard assessments for employee job descriptions and essential functions in consultation with human resources;

    writes policies and procedures
  • Coordinates and/or conducts health, safety, emergency and Clery Act training in conjunction with human resources, facilities and public safety; maintains training records and prepares training and communication materials to ensure that employees and students are aware of health, safety, emergency and Clery Act procedures; and trains multiple constituencies with varied educational levels and learning styles
  • Reviews the college’s pandemic and continuity of operations (COOP) plans and requests college-wide departments to review/update at least annually; submits facilities management departmental changes to the senior director of facilities management for review; ensures adherence to federal, state and local guidelines related to emergency planning and disaster recovery
  • Assists with compliance under the Clery Act, supporting the collection, documentation and reporting of campus crime statistics and safety-related disclosures; and assists in developing and maintaining Clery-required policies, procedures and annual disclosures in coordination with the director of public safety and Clery compliance committee
  • Serves as the chemical hygiene program coordinator; creates and maintains the Chemical Information Library and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for the college; coordinates the disposal of waste chemicals as needed; adheres to the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) guidelines regarding disposal efforts
  • Monitors the personal protective equipment (PPE) inventory for the facilities management department; verifies and tracks facilities management personnel required to use specific PPE, such as safety footwear, safety glasses, hard hats and OSHA toes; provides training on the proper use of PPE
  • Co-chairs the college’s safety committee and the facilities management department’s safety committee; investigates accidents/incidents and provides recommendations for new/improved procedures to prevent future incidents; performs routine inspections of the college facilities to ensure compliance with government regulations; recommends health and safety renovations and improvements; reviews construction documents for all new facilities, programs and renovations and makes recommendations as needed
  • Assists the director of public safety with coordinating emergency campus drills, evaluating procedures and employees’ response to drill, training employees and emergency responders, and updating the emergency operations plan
  • Promotes existing environmental sustainability initiatives and recommends the implementation of new initiatives
  • Attends peer group meetings and professional development activities related to environmental health, occupational safety, emergency management and the Clery Act
  • Contributes to the annual and five-year comprehensive department assessment process as per the College’s assessment plan
