Position: BUILDING MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR

Summary of Position

Monterey County Health Department’s Administration Bureau seeks energetic applicants with supervisory, communications and organizational skills for a Building Maintenance Supervisor. This classification is a full supervisory level in this series. The Building Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for day-to-day installations, repair and maintenance of Health Department facilities, equipment, supervision of building maintenance workers and vendors who perform skilled and semi-skilled labor/services in the repair and maintenance of Health Department facilities.

Responsibilities
  • Schedule, assign, direct, evaluate and supervise the work of maintenance personnel performing a variety of skilled and semiskilled carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, and general maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Determine priority of work order requests.
  • Perform and assist in the completion of regularly scheduled and emergency service requests.
  • Prepare correspondence including notifications and service requests with actions, expenditures and related information; perform other supervisory duties using a personal computer.
  • Provide or obtain cost estimates for installation, repair, construction, or maintenance work to be performed.
  • Train maintenance personnel and enforce proper work procedures and safety practices; demonstrate and instruct others in safety and effective methods and techniques for performing work and use of tools, equipment and vehicles.
  • Set performance standards and evaluate staff; assist in preparing performance evaluations; take corrective action; assist in employment interviews and make recommendations for selection.
  • Operate or monitor electrical, mechanical and electro-mechanical equipment, including electric generators, boilers, and chillers.
  • Prepare reports or summaries on the status of construction, repair, and maintenance activities.
The Successful Candidate

Will have a proven track record demonstrating the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Thorough Knowledge of
  • Methods and practices employed in the repair and maintenance of buildings and related mechanical, electrical, HVAC and plumbing systems.
  • Safety practices, procedures and techniques commonly used in the building maintenance trade.
Thorough Knowledge of
  • The principles of electricity and electrical, mechanical and electro-mechanical systems.
  • The equipment and tools necessary to operate and maintain lighting, heating, air conditioning and plumbing systems in county buildings.
  • Mathematical principles required to calculate the cost and benefits of projects/repairs, perform problem-solving analysis, and implement maintenance schedules.
Skill and Ability to
  • Prioritize, plan, assign, motivate, supervise, train and evaluate the work of subordinates and vendors.
  • Analyze and describe maintenance problems and recommend or perform suitable corrective action with effective use of available maintenance personnel or vendors.
  • Perform a wide variety of skilled and/or semi-skilled tasks involved in the installation, repair and maintenance of county buildings, equipment and fixtures.
  • Use tools and equipment of the building trades skillfully and safely.
  • Exercise sound judgment and initiative in identifying and solving problems.
  • Maintain cooperative relationships with coworkers, members of the public and others contacted through the course of work; respond positively to supervision and direction; and attend and perform duties regularly and reliably.

  • Ability to speak, read, and write effectively in English.
