Position: Staff Nurse I - New Grad

Position

Staff Nurse I - New Grad in various units. This is the entry level in the professional Staff Nurse series. Incumbents are generally recent graduates of nursing schools. Under the supervision of the Supervising/Charge Nurse, this incumbent performs professional nursing duties in the care and service of patients and their families; provides direct and indirect patient care in the inpatient care setting.

Provides care that reflects initiative, flexibility and responsibility in a professional and timely manner. Communicates with physician or charge nurse about changes in patient status, and results of abnormal diagnostic tests. The Staff Nurse I - New Grad is expected to work at the full scope of their licensure providing clinical care with a decreasing amount of supervision.

Candidates must be available to start working on Monday, April 6, 2026, if selected, and provide a valid California Registered Nurse license or California Interim Permit.

Units Hiring for Staff Nurse I - New Grads
  • Women and Children’s Services:
    For new grad nurses interested in careers in Labor and Delivery and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
  • 18-week program with some exposure to Women and Children's departments with didactic and simulation learning modalities concurrent with clinical hours
Distinguishing Characteristics

Under close supervision, incumbents perform routine patient care assignments and receive comprehensive in-service training. They are expected to promote to the journey level of Staff Nurse II after acquiring the appropriate experience and demonstrating satisfactory performance. This position is distinguished from the next higher level of Staff Nurse II in that the latter is expected to perform the full range of nursing duties with minimal supervision and only periodic in-service training.

Examples of Duties
  • Provides overall patient care appropriate to the nursing care plan
  • Manages stable patients under the direct supervision of Charge/Supervising RN
  • Provides teaching and support to patients and families
  • Notifies supervising RN and Health Care provider of negative change in patient status in a timely manner
  • Demonstrates understanding of pharmacokinetics and safe administration of common medications used for the treatment of patients in their assigned area
  • Safely administers routine medications by PO, IM, SQ, and rectal routes
  • Provides care for families (adult, adolescent, newborns) with considerations for their developmental levels
  • Maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients and families in accordance with hospital standards
  • Properly prepares, hangs, monitors and discontinues IV fluids and blood/blood components
  • Acts as a patient advocate
  • Develops a written plan of care
  • Assists physician with patient care
  • Monitors intake and output for patients
  • Completes accurate documentation of patient care
  • Provides ongoing assessment of patient status changes
  • Communicates to the supervising RN the need to change nursing actions based on patient condition
  • Follows chain of command and delegates appropriately to nursing assistants or medical unit clerks
  • Evaluates patient response to pain interventions including pharmacologic and non‑pharmacologic methods
  • Uses equipment appropriately for unit assigned

Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid California RN license or California RN Interim Permit
  • Basic Life Support certification issued by the American Heart Association
