Superintendent Mixed Vegetables

GENERAL DESCRIPTION / PRIMARY

PURPOSE:

This position is responsible for managing the entire Fresh Pack Romaine and Mix harvest operation. This includes both internal and external crews to harvest and pack a quality pack for Fresh Pack program in a safe manner while minimizing labor cost and overseeing the preparation of the product for delivery to the cooler in the shortest possible time and at the lowest possible cost, as well as overseeing the outside purchases of product as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS/DUTIES OF THE POSITION:
  • Oversee labor productivity of harvesting crews.
  • Plan for future Fresh Pack harvest.
  • Manage Internal and External harvest supervisors
  • Manage multiple Bud and Non-Bud harvesting crews assuring consistency in quality and pack.
  • Determine when field haul equipment should be dispatched to a field, and how that equipment should enter and exit the harvesting area.
  • Keep records of seed variety performance and make future recommendations.
  • Accurately complete and on a timely basis the planning and scheduling of the harvest crews.
  • Determine the physical location of the harvest crews.
  • Communicate orally with crew management, forepersons, and employees and to have adequate written skills to prepare written documentation.
  • Ensure adherence to all safety protocols, thereby reducing/eliminating safety incidents.
  • Manage crew labor problems and hold to a minimum unjustified grievance.
  • Maintain harvest equipment in same condition as received, less normal wear and tear.
  • Stay in compliance with employee safety and food safety regulations.
  • Ability to prepare accurate production estimates for the current week and following 5 weeks.
  • Timely and accurate communication with sales regarding volumes, sizing and quality.
JOB SPECIFIC

COMPETENCIES:
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Harvesting Supervisor.
  • Understanding of principles of proper harvesting.
  • Ability to accomplish work on time and correct errors.
  • Must have the ability to exercise considerable judgment, appear for work on time, follow directions, interact well with co-workers, understand and follow posted work rules/procedures and accept constructive criticism.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changes when needed while still minimizing cost and assuring quality.
  • Ability to take action at times without the opportunity to consult with Director.
  • Mastery of all aspects of a Supervisor's job, including crew supervision, quality, hiring and discharging of bargaining unit employees, scheduling and field haul scheduling.
  • Ability to maintain a positive work environment.
  • Fluent in all aspects of Spanish and adequate verbal English.
  • Excellent top-to-top communication skill, with internal groups (Sales) and external groups (growers and business representatives)
  • Excellent knowledge of harvesting equipment and capabilities.
  • Excellent judgment regarding future product quality while preparing estimates.
PHYSICAL AL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to walk on uneven ground.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to climb on and off harvesting equipment.
  • Ability to travel to various harvesting locations and relocate.
WORK HOUR & TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to work long hours and weekends.
  • Flexibility to work varied hours is required.
  • Ability to travel to various harvesting locations and relocate.
EXPERIENCE &

EDUCATION:
  • H.S. Diploma or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Literate and have mastered the four basic mathematical skills.
PAY RATE:
  • $120,000 - $130,000 Annually.
