Summary of Position:
The Public Health Bureau has an opening for a part-time (0.5) Occupational Therapist-Physical Handicapped Children (PHC) in the California Children’s Services (CCS) Program. The Occupational Therapist-PHC delivers a full range of occupational therapy services to physically handicapped children including evaluation, planning, and treatment. The OT works collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team to meet the therapy needs of the children served by the CCS Medical Therapy Program (MTP).
The mission of the CCS MTP is to maximize the quality of life for special needs children through ongoing assessment, treatment and consultation to the child, family, and community.
Sign-On Bonus:
As of September 8, 2023, the Health Department offers up to a $10,000 signing bonus to candidates hired into regular part-time positions for this classification from this recruitment. - Performs a full range of occupational therapy work with physically handicapped children.
- Teaches self-care activities in areas such as communication, feeding, dressing, personal hygiene and other activities of daily living; instructs children through directed activities to develop maximum functioning in fine motor skills and other movements; adapts games, crafts and activities as therapeutic exercises.
- Evaluates physically handicapped children to determine OT needs; sets therapy goals and objectives.
- Keeps records and prepares reports on patient treatment and progress.
- Establishes and monitors therapeutic exercise programs; provides treatments and instructs parents and care providers in intervention techniques to enhance function and motor skills; discusses the child’s disability with families and guides home treatment and environment adaptation.
- Consults with physicians to determine the extent of treatment required; cooperates with other professional staff for maximum benefit toward therapy goals.
- Provides consultative services for staff of agencies involved in the care of physically handicapped children; participates in parent and community meetings; orients interested individuals to the therapy program; works with local health and educational authorities and community organizations.

Thorough Knowledge of:
- Principles and methods of accepted occupational therapy, especially as applied to physically handicapped children.
- Therapeutic techniques used in occupational therapy; proper use and operation of modern OT equipment and appliances.
Working Knowledge of:
- Growth and development of normal and handicapped children.
Skill and Ability to:
- Administer OT treatments and exercises.
- Analyze, evaluate and draw logical conclusions from data.
- Read, understand and interpret physician orders and instructions for therapy and equipment.
- Write to keep records and prepare reports.
- Communicate orally to teach and instruct parents and children.
- Develop and maintain cooperative work relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Any combination of training, education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. Example of how these requirements might be acquired:
Experience:
Approximately two (2) years of experience as a registered occupational therapist, preferably providing therapy to physically handicapped children.
