On‑the‑Job TrainingThe Park Technician will receive hands‑on, on‑the‑job training from experienced staff who are dedicated to the success of new employees. Our team will guide the next Park Technician in the operation of specialized equipment, irrigation systems, and landscaping techniques, ensuring the development of skills needed to excel in the role.
Duties- Prepare and maintain parks, athletic fields, medians, recreation facilities, and other public facilities, and assist in construction and maintenance of grounds within city‑owned parks and community buildings.
- Install, operate, maintain, and repair in‑ground sprinkler systems.
- Seed, plant, and maintain turf, trees, and shrubs, including watering, trimming, mowing, fertilizing, aerification, weed, and pest control.
- Apply fertilizers and pesticides as required; recognize plant diseases and take appropriate action.
- Operate heavy equipment such as trucks, mowers, utility vehicles, blowers, chain saws, hedge trimmers, skid steers, spraying equipment, tractors and attachments, and other light equipment.
- Perform preventative and routine maintenance; conduct equipment safety inspections; service and perform minor repairs to equipment.
- Provide custodial services for parks and facilities, including cleaning of restrooms and removal of trash and debris.
- Lead work crews and maintain records of activities and routine operational records; work on special projects and assignments; respond to weather and other emergencies.
- Assist other staff as necessary; interact with the public; maintain and enforce park rules.
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- Must obtain a certified pesticide license within two (2) years from the start date of employment.
- One (1) year of work experience in irrigation, general horticulture, and/or landscape maintenance and equipment operation.
- Valid Kansas driver’s license.
- Heavy exertion up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects.
- Extensive walking.
- Work in possible adverse weather conditions.
- Backhoes, blowers, chain saws, chippers, dump trucks, hand and power tools, hedge trimmers, lift trucks, mowers (precision and standard), seeders and top dressers, skid steers, spraying equipment, tractors and attachments, tree spades, two‑way radios, utility vehicles, and other similar equipment.
- Monday – Friday.
- 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
- $20.12 – $21.13 per hour.
- $41,850 – $43,950 per year.
- Additional $1.50 per hour paid for hours worked after 6:00 p.m. and before 6:00 a.m.
- 48 hours of vacation available upon hire; additional 48 hours earned during the year (96 hours in first year).
- 96 hours of sick leave during first year.
