DescriptionThe Street Maintenance Worker plays a critical role in maintaining safe & efficient infrastructure for Salina’s citizens by performing tasks like street repairs, debris removal, & operating essential equipment. Workers ensure the community remains accessible & safe during all seasons. The position offers valuable hands‑on experience with construction & public safety, aligning with industry standards for municipal maintenance roles. The City of Salina supports a strong work‑life balance by limiting overtime & providing training opportunities for professional growth, including CDL certification.

Street Maintenance Workers receive on‑the‑job training from experienced staff who provide hands‑on guidance in operating specialized equipment, performing street repairs, & maintaining public infrastructure. New employees are supported every step of the way, ensuring they gain confidence & proficiency in their tasks.
Duties- Perform a variety of semi‑skilled & skilled manual labor in the construction & maintenance of streets, storm sewers, buildings & other municipal facilities.
- May act as lead worker for new and/or seasonal employees; oversee work crews in the absence of supervisors.
- Operate & maintain light to heavy‑duty equipment including tandem trucks, street sweepers, backhoes, front‑end loaders, rollers, boom trucks & related equipment; use a variety of hand & power tools.
- Patch streets; determine repair requirements & calculate pavement materials & quantities; understand mathematical concepts to include basic arithmetic; perform concrete & masonry work.
- Load & haul equipment, sand & gravel, asphalt & other construction & maintenance materials.
- Provide public safety in construction zones in accordance with the MUTCD.
- Assist on the flood control system; service & maintain flood control gates & pumps; make plumbing repairs.
- Service & perform minor equipment repairs; perform minor welding.
- Remove storm debris & snow; place barricades.
- Mow & trim trees, grass, weeds & shrubbery; apply pesticides.
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- One (1) year construction or maintenance work.
- Must live within 40‑minute response time.
- Must possess a valid Kansas driver's license at hire.
- Preferred possession of a valid Kansas Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) with air brakes & tanker endorsements, or obtain within one (1) year from start date.
The City of Salina will pay enrollment fees & pay hourly wages for employees to attend Class B CDL training at Salina Area Technical College.
Work TypeVery heavy, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Machines, Tools & EquipmentAsphalt equipment, backhoes, boom trucks, brooms, chain saw, concrete vibrator, dump trucks, earth vibrator & tamps, front‑end loaders, hand & power tools, hoes, jackhammer, light to heavy duty equipment, mud‑jack, rakes, pickup, pumps, rollers, salt spreaders, shovel, street sweepers, tandem trucks, tractor mowers, tractor loader, & weed‑eaters.
Hours- Monday‑Friday
- 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
- $20.73‑21.77 /hr.
- $43,093‑45,282/yr.
- Additional $1.50/hour paid for hours worked after 6:00 p.m. & before 6:00 a.m.
- 48 hours of vacation available upon hire; additional 48 hours earned during the year (96 hours in first year).
- 96 hours of sick leave during first year.
