OverviewThe Traffic Control Laborer position is integral to the city's infrastructure, playing a pivotal role in both the daily functionality & long-term planning of Salina's transportation network. Beyond maintaining & installing vital traffic control devices, this role directly impacts public safety by reducing incidents & ensuring orderly traffic flow.
On-the-Job TrainingNew employees are given comprehensive on-the-job training provided by experienced staff. This training facilitates skill development in installing & maintaining traffic devices, cultivating an understanding of safety protocols & equipment operations.
Duties & Responsibilities- Traffic Device Maintenance & Installation: Participates in the installation, maintenance, & repair of critical traffic control devices, including stop signs, yield signs, and traffic signals, ensuring compliance with national & state safety standards while enhancing public visibility.
- Roadway Marking: Plays a key role in the painting & repainting of essential road markings, covering complex layouts such as school zones & bike lanes, utilizing reflective materials to optimize nighttime & inclement weather visibility.
- Sign Replacement & Visibility Assurance: Engages in evaluating & replacing degraded traffic signs, meticulously adjusting for optimal driver visibility, factoring in local environmental conditions.
- Traffic Management Support & Coordination: Actively collaborates with event planners, emergency services, & public works teams to ensure cohesive traffic setups during citywide events, construction activities, & roadworks.
- Equipment Operation & Care: Operates a variety of tools & machinery used in traffic control tasks, ensuring all equipment is properly maintained & stored.
- Eighth grade graduate minimum.
- High school diploma or G.E.D. preferred.
- Six (6) months to one (1) year of experience in electronics, electrical equipment repair, or related work preferred.
- Heavy, exerting up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force continually to move objects.
- Works outside in varying weather conditions.
- Must be eighteen (18) years of age or older.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Must pass background checks.
- Bucket lifts, calculator, multi meter, Ohm meter, pencils, screw drivers, small hand tools, telephone, test bench equipment, vehicles & wrenches.
- Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.; 40 hours per week available.
- Flexible schedule to include either morning or afternoon shifts; 20+ per week.
- Position typically works from June–August or for a total of 950 hours per season.
- Pay range based on qualifications: $12.73 - 14.73/hr.
- $14.04 - 16.04/hr.
- $15.48 - 17.48/hr.
