JOB DESCRIPTION
The Information Services Assistant at Salina Public Library provides friendly, high-quality support to patrons by answering diverse questions, assisting with public computers, and offering general library help. This customer service–focused role requires strong interpersonal skills, a positive attitude, and the ability to promote library programs while building strong relationships with the public and staff.

Part Time - 12 to 15 hours per week
Currently hiring for the following time frames:
Monday & Thursday: 5:00 – 8 p.m.
Every Other Weekend
Saturday: 9:45 a.m.– 5 p.m.
Sunday: 11:45 a.m.– 5 p.m.
Schedules are adjusted as needed for the Library. Above is an anticipated schedule. This is subject to change based upon service levels.
Starting Pay: $16.96 per hour

The Information Service’s Assistant must ....
Reference & Reader’s Advisory- Answer reference questions using authoritative resources (print, online, microfilm).
- Provide readers’ advisory assistance and be knowledgeable about popular authors, topics, and trends.
- Answer a variety of questions related to patron accounts, library collections, and events.
- Access and use the Library catalog in-depth to find resources, manage holds, and update patron accounts.
- Navigate digital resources across devices and assist patrons with digital downloads (e.g., eBooks, audio books).
- Be knowledgeable and confident in using library technologies.
- Provide first-level tech troubleshooting for patrons.
- Assist with basic computer skills and support patrons with tech-related questions.
- Operate a multi-line phone system.
- Utilize technology efficiently and appropriately.
- Provide excellent customer service in person, on the phone, and online.
- Communicate clearly, accurately, and timely with a diverse public and coworkers.
- Redirect inquiries to other departments when needed.
- Help patrons with anything they need and show a willingness to assist.
- Deal with stressful situations with tact and diplomacy.
- Enforce library policies and procedures respectfully, even in high-stress or confrontational situations.
- Work scheduled hours reliably and use breaks appropriately.
- Help maintain tidy, organized library spaces.
- Complete opening and closing procedures.
- Conduct general clerical and office tasks.
- Assist in any library area as needed.
- Prepare for and attend staff and project meetings.
- Work on special projects or perform other duties as assigned.
- Support the library’s mission and demonstrate professional behavior.
- Maintain a general knowledge of library programs and services.
- Be passionate about learning and sharing knowledge.
- Demonstrate critical thinking skills and attention to detail.
- Be trustworthy and able to work independently without supervision.
- Comply with all library policies and uphold professional standards.
- Develop and complete a yearly work plan with the department head.
- Support the library’s mission and provide exceptional customer service, whether to patrons or co-workers.
- Prepare for and participate in staff and project team meetings.
- Demonstrate professional behavior and comply with library policies and procedures, including adhering to library dress code.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Pre-employment drug screen. (Post-employment drug screen may also take place.)
- Pre-employment background check.
- Basic keyboarding skills.
- The ability to work with a variety of technology equipment and applications, including, but not limited to, Word documents, spreadsheets, internet browsers, email, and Google Drive.
Light to moderate physical work.
- Lifting, carrying and pushing up to 40 pounds with or without assistance.
- Frequent lifting, carrying, standing, walking, bending, climbing stairs, twisting, reaching, pulling and pushing.
- Speech and hearing abilities to maintain communication with patrons and co-workers.
- Vision to read and interpret reports, written documents and electronic communications.
- Work is primarily indoors, with some outdoor work for book drop pickups and other Library event assistance.
