Position: Physician (Gastroenterology)

Overview

Salem VA HCS is looking for a Physician - Chief Gastroenterologist to fill a vacancy in the Specialty Care - GI Department. This position requires supervisory skills to manage providers including APPs. The incumbent should have experience as a Gastroenterology fellowship site director to provide continuity for affiliated fellowship programs. Education of residents and students is also a requirement. Will care for our Nation's Veterans and support the ICARE Values.

Responsibilities
  • The Section Chief works with the Service Chiefs and Administrative Officers to analyze data, prepare reports, and plan for improvement from a variety of VA reports and other performance measures.
  • The Section Chief is responsible for ensuring that their employees do not allow their mandatory training requirements to lapse.
  • Business Planning: work with Medical Service office on Decision Support System (DSS) mapping, hiring needs, capacity analysis, workloads, resource needs (equipment, information technology, supplies, space, logistics).
  • Clinical Management including indirect patient care: open encounter and open consult management, CPRS documentation requirements, oversight of clinic scheduling and access, ensuring staff productivity, and oversight of relevant performance measures.
  • Patient Care:
    Practitioners are expected to provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the promotion of health, prevention of illness, treatment of disease, and care at the end of life.
  • Interpersonal and Communication

    Skills:

    Practitioners are expected to demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that enable them to establish and maintain professional relationships with patients, families, and other members of the health care team.
  • The Section Chief functions as a liaison to the Associate Chief of Staff (ACOS) for Education and the program director for UME/GME issues.
  • He/she ensures orientation to service rotation for program trainees (GI fellows, residents, students).
  • Practitioners are expected to show effectiveness in teaching, monitor and coordinate educational activities, and comply with necessary trainee supervision.
  • Work Schedule:

    Monday - Friday 07:45 am - 04:30 pm with on-call services for the GI Section and 1:4 weekend a month.
Qualifications

Basic Requirements

  • United States Citizenship:
    Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved school
  • Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia
  • Residency Training:
    Completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
  • Board certification status as required for faculty status in VA academic training programs
  • Approved residencies include: (ACGME) or (AOA) or other residencies with 5 years of verified practice in the U.S. as deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee
  • Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency programs who would otherwise meet basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs)
  • PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis; PRPs are not independent practitioners and have a limited scope of practice under supervision
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Additional Requirement:

    Preferred Experience:

    GI Fellowship Site Program director experience of at least 3 years and 5 years as a GI Section Chief
