Position SummaryPosition is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval – award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.
Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements- United States Citizenship:
Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy - Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved school of medicine or osteopathic medicine
- Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth or the District of Columbia
- Residency training completed in an accredited core specialty program leading to eligibility for board certification (ACGME or AOA approved, or other residency with at least five years of verified U.S. practice)
- Resident physicians currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency programs who meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs)
- PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
- PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision
- Proficiency in spoken and written English
- Preferred experience:

- The Chief of Urology reports to the Chief of Surgery – Surgical Service
- Manages the Urology Section within the Surgical Service at the Salem VAMC – Salem, Virginia
- Supervises subordinate staff within the Urology Section
- Provides comprehensive urological care services, follow‑up care of existing conditions, and emergency management at the Salem VA Medical Center
- Maintains licensure and credentials to practice urological surgery, including all diagnostic and therapeutic modalities
- Delivers care primarily in the Urology Clinic and Operating Room, with additional service in the ER or inpatient units as needed
- Provides pre‑operative and post‑operative urological services, including hospital rounds for urology patients
- Admits patients to appropriate level of care (ICU, stepdown, acute care) and co‑manages patients under an attending physician
- Performs urological surgery in the operating room – averaging one to five cases per day (e.g., cystoscopies, stent placement, TURP, open/laparoscopic/robotic prostatectomy, nephrectomy, bladder resection, urethral dilations)
- Conducts transrectal prostate needle biopsies (ultrasound assist) and obtains biopsy specimens
- Conducts weekly outpatient and inpatient clinics – 20 to 25 patients per day
- Documents services through appropriate notes (history & physical, progress notes, operative notes, discharge summaries)
