VDOT Salem District Office - Salem, VA 24153
Construction Inspectors inspect, observe, and document construction and maintenance projects; perform tests on soils and materials under the supervision of a Project Engineer. The inspector’s day‑to‑day direct supervisor may be a client’s employee. Inspectors may range from entry‑level to senior positions. All inspectors are required to travel and be available to work anywhere in the state, as assignments change. Inspectors must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and be able to work night shifts when required.
EssentialFunctions
- Perform field inspections of construction and maintenance projects, existing roadways, structures and facilities.
- Conduct or observe and document tests on soils, asphalt, concrete, aggregates, bituminous products, metal products and industrial coatings.
- Respond to data requests.
- Participate in traffic control activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Soil and Aggregate Compaction
- Asphalt Field Level I & II
- Hydraulic Cement Concrete Field
- Pavement Marking
- Slurry Surfacing
- Flagger Certification
- Certification for Erosion and Sediment Control Inspection
- Stormwater Management (Inspector) Certification
- Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control
- GRIT (Guardrail Certification)
- Nuclear Gauge Safety Training
- 10‑Hour OSHA Safety Training
- Fill out the Inspector’s Daily Report (IDR) to record all labor, equipment, and material used each day.
- Maintain daily progress photos of the work.
- Submit Force Account records when work changes remain but still must be completed.
- Maintain a sketchbook containing various construction documentation.
- Participate in the reconciliation of pay quantities on progress payments submitted by the contractor.
- Attend meetings as needed and appropriate.
- When appropriate, participate in change‑order negotiations.
- When appropriate, participate in CPM schedule meetings.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid driver’s license.
