Overview

Marion County requires on-site work. Remote work is not available. Marion County Juvenile Department is recruiting for part-time, temporary/on-call relief workers to provide vacation, illness, school breaks, and vacancy coverage in Detention.

Please Note:

Juvenile Relief Workers selected to work in Detention may also work in the Guaranteed Assistance Program, but they are not eligible to also work in Alternative Programs. If you already work as a Juvenile Relief Worker in Alternative Programs, you are not eligible to work for Detention or the Guaranteed Attendance Program.

Attention Marion County or Former Marion County Employees:
You must include your Marion County work experience in the application. Please include volunteer experience (working with youth) in the work experience section of your application and include "VOLUNTEER" at the end of the job title.

Juvenile Relief Worker For Detention Availability Requirements:
Detention operates a 24/7 facility, and the use of Relief Workers is necessary to fill shifts throughout the day. Known availability is paramount to efficient scheduling and operations of the program.

Detention Center

Detention is a 24/7 operation. It provides a safe and secure environment for the temporary custody of delinquent youth who have been charged by law enforcement or who meet other criteria. Detention is a structured environment where youth receive education, counseling, medical services, physical education and recreation, and cognitive and other skill development programs.

Typical Duties

Depending on program area, not all duties listed below will be required. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide orientation for incoming youth and assist in adjusting to the facility or program; act as a positive role model; attend to daily needs of juveniles.
  • Prepare paperwork required by policy for juvenile offenders; supervise and write evaluations of juvenile behavior; write behavior/incident reports as required.
  • Assist in the intake process; may conduct searches; assess medical needs; secure personal effects, currency, and contraband; prepare necessary paperwork.
  • Maintain order and respect for authority; observe and address potentially hostile behavior; take preventative action.
  • Respond to emergencies; use appropriate discipline techniques and controls as needed.
  • Ensure safety; report faulty equipment; perform cleaning and minor maintenance with or without youth.
  • Facilitate education and skills-building activities; lead recreational activities; may perform minor cleaning or maintenance.
  • Work a variety of hours; may have rotating shifts; attend mandatory trainings and meetings.
  • Maintain security of the facility including key and equipment control; conduct inspections and searches; supervise visitors.
  • Provide information on individual youth to probation staff, caseworkers or medical personnel; communicate clearly in writing and verbally; maintain confidentiality.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, clients, families, and the public.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Requirements for the Position

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of college coursework in Juvenile Justice, Sociology, Psychology or a related field; OR
  • Two (2) years' experience (paid or unpaid) working with juveniles or at-risk youth; OR
  • Any satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience relevant to the position.

Additional Necessary Requirements

  • The finalist will be required to pass a criminal history background check, including fingerprinting; conviction may not necessarily disqualify an individual.
  • This is a safety sensitive/special needs position. Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug screen, including marijuana testing. The Marion County Drug and Alcohol Use and Testing Policy can be found at:
  • Final candidates may be required to pass a pre-employment psychological examination.
  • This is a part-time, temporary/on-call relief position, eligible for overtime.
  • This position is not represented by a union.
  • Works in a 24-hour, 7-day a week operation, with rotating shift schedules. Work schedule determined by department needs.
Knowledge, Skills and Ability

Knowledge of juvenile behavior and corrections techniques; knowledge of security procedures and first aid; ability to learn juvenile laws in the State of Oregon; ability to communicate effectively with juveniles, co-workers and supervisory staff; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to keep records; ability to develop effective working relationships with other agencies, co-workers and the public; ability to exercise sound judgment and work a flexible schedule.
