Effective Feb. 1, 2026, the compensation plan for this position will be increased to reflect a Cost-of-Living Adjustment of 2.5%. The salary listed in this posting does not reflect the voted adjustment.
ODF’s Fire Protection Program protects 16 million acres of forest, both privately owned and public lands. The department’s firefighting policy is straightforward: put out fires quickly and at the smallest possible size. Protect revenue‑generating working forests while safeguarding ecosystem values such as fish and wildlife habitats. Effective fire suppression also prevents costly damage to the timber resources vital to Oregon’s economy.
Minimum Qualifications- Four (4) seasons in wildland fire suppression OR a bachelor’s degree in forestry or a closely related natural resources field and one (1) season in wildland fire suppression.
- Must be 18 years of age and hold a valid driver’s license.
- Must obtain Class B Warden certification within the trial service period.
- Must pass the physical fitness Work Capacity Test at the arduous level if selected for employment.
- Consideration may be given to applicants who do not meet the four‑season requirement if the position cannot be filled at the qualified level.
- Perform forest fire suppression activities.
- Perform pre-suppression readiness activities.
- Perform fire prevention and education activities.
- Assist with grounds and facility maintenance.
- Occasionally perform forest tasks involving slash burning, pre‑commercial thinning, road brushing, and similar duties.
- Forestry knowledge: understanding forest management practices and related regulations.
- Fire management: proficiency in fire suppression, safety, and fire‑knowledge concepts.
- Equipment operation: experience operating forestry tools (chainsaws, portable pumps, fire engines) and navigation tools such as GPS and mapping software.
- Communication: the ability to handle conflict with team members, landowners, and leadership.
This position supports wildfire operations in a variety of environments and may involve extended or irregular hours during peak activity. Work can include periods of physical exertion in heat, smoke, and rugged terrain. Travel is required, and employees may be assigned to 14‑day deployments, during which they must be prepared and self‑sufficient. Some assignments occur in remote or rural areas where cell service, facilities, and other resources may be limited.
