Marion County requires on-site work. Remote work is not available. Marion County Adult Behavioral Health is seeking a skilled and compassionate Registered Nurse to join our fast‑paced outpatient team. This position is ideal for someone passionate about psychiatric nursing and driven to make a meaningful difference in their community.

In this role, you will provide direct nursing care to adults living with serious mental illness, many of whom also experience co‑occurring substance use disorders. Key responsibilities include completing nursing assessments, monitoring vital signs, administering injections, coordinating medications, and supporting our team of psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners. The position is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

General Statement of Duties

Provides nursing services in behavioral health programs; including assessment and care of clients as part of the treatment plan; evaluates medication effectiveness and other health care needs.

Supervision

Works under the supervision of a Health Clinical Supervisor or Medical Director; may work under the lead direction of a Behavioral Health Nurse Senior who assigns duties, establishes goals, and reviews results.

Typical Duties
  • Uphold confidentiality rules/regulations including HIPAA.
  • Perform nursing assessments (using the Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale), take vitals, and administer intramuscular medications.
  • Assist with day‑to‑day management of patients’ medication regimes; provide education regarding compliance, fill pill boxes, locate pharmacy services, and assist in managing symptoms not requiring a prescriber’s immediate attention.
  • Provide emotional support, compassion, and de‑escalation when necessary.
  • Perform telephonic triage, including brief mental status exams and disposition triage.
  • Provide medication training and support in person or via telephone/video.
  • Link patients to direct delivery of services (medical, social, educational) and manage referrals, arrangements, and follow‑up.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of nursing and related services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned such as cross‑train in the Medication Assisted Treatment dispensary and provide occasional backup coverage.
Response Level 2

In an emergency, the employee makes a reasonable effort to report to work and may be required to perform duties outside regular assignments or work an extended/flexible schedule. Staff must complete Incident Command System 100 and 700 training online or in‑person.

Requirements for the Position Experience And Training
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing or a related field (e.g., health education, psychology, or social work); AND
  • One year of behavioral health nursing or other related experience; OR
  • Any satisfactory combination of work, education, training, or experience relevant to the position as determined by Marion County.
Special Requirements
  • Possession of a license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Oregon at the time of appointment.
  • Finalist will be required to pass a criminal history background check; conviction of a crime may not necessarily disqualify an individual.
  • Safety Sensitive/Special Needs position; must pass a post‑offer drug screen, including testing for marijuana. Refer to Marion County Drug and Alcohol Use and Testing Policy #518.
  • Must not be excluded from participation in federal health care or procurement programs.
  • Position represented by a union.
  • Full‑time position eligible for overtime.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of behavioral health nursing practices and community behavioral health services; ability to function independently with limited supervision; communicate orally and in writing; maintain constructive relationships with consumers; accept and utilize administrative direction, supervision, and consultation.

Physical Requirements

Stands, sits, moves, bends, stoops, lifts up to 10 lb., pushes, pulls, operates a keyboard; speaks with a clear audible voice; distinguishes colors; hears a normal level of speech.
