Overview
The Clinical Resource Surgical Technologist helps manage all aspects of the urology service line and the delivery of care to patients. Works under the supervision of the RN to deliver safe and effective care. Has the responsibility and authority to request and use governing and administrative resources, technological and support systems, and multidisciplinary clinical experts to manage and deliver quality, cost-effective patient care.
Proficient as a Surgical Technologist II, functioning as an expert with a specific surgical focus encompassing all aspects of patient and family care, including equipment availability, standards, and competencies.

- Compliance Responsibilities: understands and adheres to NSMC compliance standards as documented in Corporate Compliance Policies, Code of Conduct, and NSMC policies; keeps abreast of applicable federal, state, and NSMC regulations; ensures staff training and adherence to policies and procedures.
- Job Specific Responsibilities – Clinical Practice: utilizes patient-focused model; assists staff nurses with planning, implementing, evaluating, and managing care considering age, development, socioeconomic, psychological, physical, spiritual, and cultural factors; applies current medical literature and knowledge in medicine, pharmacology, and pathophysiology; maintains competency in surgical practice and annual professional development; completes mandatory education; collects and analyzes patient information; collaborates with nurses, physicians and the health care team to expedite and coordinate services and optimize resource use;
coordinates with physicians regarding surgical equipment, supplies and implants; ensures timely initiation, completion, communication and documentation of services; identifies barriers and seeks resources to resolve problems; seeks opportunities to improve patient care; demonstrates fiscal accountability through cost-effective use of time and materials; assists staff nurses to coordinate resources for hospital admission and discharge; acts as a resource/consultant for team members;
develops and revises instructional materials for staff development in collaboration with educators.
- Ensures practice meets external regulatory requirements; identifies areas for improvement and develops compliance plans; chairs or participates in unit committees to promote Division and Unit objectives; assists staff with basic and unit-based competencies through referral or mentoring; collaborates with Manager/Clinical Leader on Performance Improvement activities; role models collaborative practice and communication standards; develops plans for cost-effective use of time, materials, and resources;
orders supplies and equipment for the service; develops doctor preference cards.
- Models service excellence through positive interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors, and hospital personnel; develops collegial relationships promoting a professional and productive environment; expands clinical expertise via ongoing education and professional organizations; participates in unit-based educational activities; supports change management and implementation; embodies service excellence standards; participates in multidisciplinary team conferences and educational offerings; demonstrates assertiveness skills; participates in orientation of new employees as a preceptor and mentor;
supports performance improvement activities; ensures compliance with external regulatory requirements.
- Follows hospital safety policies and maintains a safe environment; incorporates infection control standards into daily activities; reports to Patient Care Manager or designee; ensures staff education and resource needs related to procedures, equipment and new practices (e.g., updating Preference Cards); navigates corporate and hospital intranet and uses departmental information systems for daily practice and documentation.
- Works collaboratively with all health care team members to meet service needs; assists with planning and implementing changes in practices or procedures, e.g., updating Preference Cards in Surgical Services.
