Learn more about Salem Academy Charter School here. Salem Academy Charter School is seeking a Part‑Time Reading Specialist Tutor to provide targeted literacy intervention for students in grades 6–12. The Reading Specialist Tutor will work with small groups and individual students to build foundational reading skills, improve reading fluency and comprehension, and support differentiated literacy needs across the academic program.
The tutor will collaborate with classroom teachers and Student Services staff to align interventions with curriculum and student goals. This is a temporary part‑time position intended to provide supplemental support during the remainder of the 2025–26 school year. Continuation may be considered pending program success and funding.
- Deliver direct instruction to individual students or small groups using research‑based reading interventions.
- Diagnose reading skill deficits and develop individualized or small‑group intervention plans. Use assessments to determine students’ reading levels and monitor progress over time. Maintain accurate records of student progress and adjust instruction as needed.
- Consult with classroom teachers to coordinate reading support and align strategies with content‑area instruction. Participate in meetings with teachers, families, and support staff as needed to share progress updates and discuss strategies. Communicate regularly with supervising staff to ensure interventions align with school wide literacy goals.
- Develop individualized, skill‑appropriate lesson plans and maintain educational materials. Implement structured, research‑based intervention programs with fidelity.
- Escort students to and from sessions as needed and ensure a safe session environment.
- Attend required training or check‑ins with supervising educators.
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, English, Literacy, or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
- Reading tutor experience required; reading specialist experience preferred.
- Demonstrated experience teaching reading or implementing reading interventions.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with teachers and school staff.
- Strong communication skills and ability to build rapport with students.
- Massachusetts DESE Licensure required for Reading Specialists.
- Experience with Orton‑Gillingham, Wilson Reading, or other structured literacy approaches.
- Prior experience supporting students with learning differences, including dyslexia.
- Background clearance.
- Multilingual, including Spanish and English.
- Have designed and successfully implemented a culturally responsive curriculum.
- Have similar life experiences as our students.
- Have a Master’s, PhD, or EdD degree.
- Have National Board Certification.
