System Protection and Control Technician

Responsibilities
  • Calibrate, install, maintain, and repair protective relays and associated equipment to ensure the efficient, safe, reliable operation of the Duke Energy Electric Grid.
  • Work in various environments, including generation plants, transmission switch yards, control houses, and distribution substations.
  • Maintain a high level of hazard recognition and safe work practices.
  • Maintain, install, repair, and troubleshoot complex control systems, protective relay systems (microprocessor and electro‑mechanical), substation and electric utility protection systems, station automation, and SCADA systems.
  • Read and interpret substation drawings (single line drawings, AC/DC schematics, panel wiring diagrams, and panel layout drawings).
  • Perform switching and tagging to obtain proper clearance on equipment for repair, maintenance, or construction work per procedure.
  • Be available for call‑out responsibilities, all hours as needed, including day or night, weekends or holidays, and all weather conditions.
  • Travel and stay overnight to various locations; respond to power system emergencies.
Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities)
  • Basic understanding of AC/DC theory, Ohm’s law, single phase, three phase, watts, vars, VA, phase angles, power factor and other power system parameters, computers, and associated software.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical/electronic schematics and functional diagrams.
  • Proficiency with state‑of‑the‑art test equipment such as multimeters, relay test instruments, oscilloscopes, and digital analyzers.
  • Basic knowledge of computers and associated software.
  • Strong aptitude for technical work, demonstrated by passing the applicable EEI Technician test.
  • Switching & Tagging Certification within 180 days.
  • Successful completion of the Assistant SPAC training program.
Required Basic Qualifications
  • Minimum 2‑year degree or equivalent in Electronics, Electrical Technology, or a similar electrical field, or an honorable discharge from the military with a relevant background, or a journeyman relay technician classification at Duke Energy or another utility.
Physical Requirements
  • Lift up to 75 lbs.
  • Push/pull weights up to 75 lbs.
  • Manual dexterity to operate small hand tools and turn small knobs.
  • Ability to sit for 2‑3 hours; may involve driving a truck or sitting.
  • Move frequently to unload equipment and install/maintain/repair equipment.
  • Climb or use authorized equipment to reach various heights.
  • Bend, stoop, or squat repeatedly.
  • Work in enclosed, tight spaces.
