This position serves our partners at the Department of Public Safety (DPS). The MNIT DPS team provides technical support to an agency dedicated to prevention, preparedness, response, recovery, enforcement, and education. The team manages a large number of applications to serve 15 diverse public safety divisions located across Minnesota.
As a Data Architect, you will provide strategic leadership in data architecture, technical strategy, and design for the Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) data and analytics platforms. It involves collaborating with business and technical staff to develop and implement data policies, standards, and guidelines, while also leading long‑term planning and architectural development to assess and improve data effectiveness. The role focuses on designing and implementing business information solutions using data repositories and business intelligence tools that support both specific program needs and broader agency goals.
Serving as the primary contact for DPS program staff on data‑related initiatives, the position also leads and guides technical team efforts within MNIT DPS.
This position requires an employee to be onsite at 445 Minnesota St, St Paul, Minnesota for 3 days per week, with the opportunity to work from a telework location on other days.
Minimum Qualifications- Position requires a minimum of six (6) years of experience analyzing system requirements and implementing migration methods for existing data.
- Database modeling, design, integration, implementation, and management and associated tool sets.
- Experience developing data governance policies and standards.
- Knowledge of architect standards and conventions such as TOGAF, ISO/IEC, Zachman, Federal Enterprise Architecture, etc.
- Requirements gathering and Software Development Experience with writing code and the SDLC.
- Understanding of data classification and security best practices.
- Customer service skills that include active listening, empathy, and problem‑solving.
- Ability to deliver effective verbal or written messages that facilitate a mutual understanding on both parties.
A master’s degree in Information Technology or an IT related field substitutes for three (3) years of experience, OR an IT related bachelor’s degree substitutes for two (2) years, OR an IT related associate’s degree substitutes for one (1) year.
StronglyPreferred Qualifications
- Contributing to a Technology Roadmap.
- Expertise with various reporting/visualization / analytics/ dash‑boarding / Business Intelligence Products (tableau, Power BI, etc.)
- Creating Prototypes and Real‑World Implementation.
- Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) Experience.
- Designing and Implementing for Cloud Based Models and use of data visualization tools (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS).
